I'm thinking about installing IRS for my EX GSR to tame some of the "Rear Wheel Steer"
of the OEM live axle/LSD setup. Higher "exit speed" and quicker lap times then possible IMHO.
Either IRS setup from '86 Galant Turbo... or from '96 4wd Lancer 1800 GSR.
Galant IRS needs full rebuild... and $$$.
GSR IRS in great condition but rear track is about 6" wider than EX.
Serious fabrication required. I have a Evo 6 rear floorpan I can use but it might need more
than just RalliArt bodyshell arches for so much extra track width.
It might need full front & rear arches for such a big increase in rear track.
How about something like the '80 Ford Escort RS2000 "X Pak" body kit on EX Turbo shell?
Advice, comments and suggestions appreciated. _________________ Walk softly... and carry a BIG stick!

Mustang guys here also install a panhard bar/torque arm or WATTS link.
Also, carefull selection of shocks and springs is a must.
Use de Ole man's Galant Turbo set-up. May be a lil bit more primitive than the '96, but
I'm sure you'll have more ability to fine-tune the set-up to your liking. _________________ www.ttonline.org

About the styling of X-Pak style arches on an EX...
Don't they look better than RalliArt 'bib' arches if using 17" Evo 6 rims and Brembos?
BTW the Galant IRS doesn't have rear LSD but the GSR IRS has helical rear LSD installed.
That is the main reason why I am thinking about the GSR setup. _________________ Walk softly... and carry a BIG stick! |

Welcome to MadMen tony.
Sorry... but somehow the look of large bib arches doesn't do it for me either.
That guy did a hell of a lot of work though.

Yup... but I have both setups already. Both perform VERY well...
and also I can't afford to experiment further. _________________ Walk softly... and carry a BIG stick! |

I had this same idea, I think it will look quite good imho.
You going to bring the rear flair onto the back door? _________________

Yup the rear door and rear quarter panel sections must be included in the design.
However, because the EX is 4-door shell, the styling will have to be carefully balanced.
The OEM belt-line will be used as a starting point.
Dimensions will obviously be modified to suit the EX's slightly different profile.
Styling at "B-pillar" will have to be considered, as Ford's 2-door proportions and
different "parting lines" will look "funny" on a 4-door shell... etc. etc.
Full-sized Mock-up will have to be done in modelling clay or similar material... Any suggestions? _________________ Walk softly... and carry a BIG stick! |

You can use "styrotex" foam in the full size mock-up too. It can even be used for fiberglass moulds. If you can get your hands on a scale model (which I have been trying to do) you can mock it up on that first.
You will be basically using some of the same techniques used when designing new car bodies I figure. _________________

Don't worry MG...Not "square enough to suit the LT shape.
"styrotex" foam... Is that the ordinary 4' x 8' styrotex sheets zodiaque?
... or is there a "spray on" alternative that I can use? _________________ Walk softly... and carry a BIG stick! |

You can use foam blocks. Shape the blocks to the shape you want by shaving them down. You then layer the fiberglass over this form.
You will need to use a resin appropriate to the foam core or it will melt straight through the foam.
In some cases I have seen the foam chipped out after the fiberglass curred but I think that if the foam is first coated in mold release before the 'glass is layered it can be removed easily. _________________
