BMW is renowned for building some of the best engines in the business but when it came time to develop an engine for its Mini Cooper the German carmaker called on Frances PSA Peugeot-Citroen Group. The result of the joint-effort was a new family of four-cylinder engines ranging from 1.4 to 1.6L that have been used by both Peugeot and Mini in the past.

BMWs CEO Norbert Reithofer has now revealed the four-cylinder engines will be used in the next-generation 1-series and possibly even more BMW models. Speaking with German newspaper Allgemeine Zeitung, Reithofer said the original plan was to only use the engines in Mini brand cars but growing economic pressure and stiff competition in the fiercely competitive compact car segment had led to the latest decision.

During the same interview, Reithofer also confirmed that the next-generation 7-Series will be fitted with BMWs first production hybrid drivetrain although he wasnt willing to give a timeline.

We could see even more models using BMW engines in the future as the German carmaker is considering selling its engines to rival carmakers including Fiat and GM and is currently in negotiations with Mercedes-Benz over a possible engine deal.
