South Run Review
18TH Sept 2005
JOHN POWELL SET RECORD TIME OF 1.53 !!!!!!
Speed Stage Rallying continued in all its glory in the south on Sunday with a field of 12 cars entered.
We started the morning with deliberation on a trench that had been carved on the stage by heavy rainfall during the week, this was on the driving line as you are entering a very fast right corner, so to confirm that the teams would be OK with the problem we had all drivers do a drive through the stage to have a final look at the crater and the caution cones that were being put in place to mark the danger area.
First Car on the Line was the Stag/Ultra Corolla WRC of John Powell / Nick Telfer and they set the pace in the 4WD class with 1.53sec and in 2WD it was the novice team of Rezan Mohammed / Arshad Mondro again setting the pace for the experienced competitors to follow (2.33sec) and action we had as on the very first stage the Adopt A Bench Evo1 with Darrel Ramesar in Command took flight on the very fast right uphill before the Tunnel after his clutch pedal did not release and took his Co Pilot Anand for an off route Flight 50ft down in a drain with the Back hooked on a Tree ( Dont ask how) According to Darrel the first thing I saw when we eventually got out of the car was a turtle on the bonnet ! Serious !!!!!, They were both OK and the Stage continued until the lunch break before the Wrecker and the Cutlass Man could get the car out, the damage was extensive so they were unable to rejoin the rally.
Vishal Dhanraj in the ESSO Sunny has some mechanical issues on the first stage as well, which left him out of the chase for the 2WD challenge and the fight was with the Lancer 1800 Turbo (Rezan & Arshad) and the Tyre Clinic 2000cc B13 Sunny (Shelford & Rajesh) and at the end of the day the difference in time was only 10sec for first place in 2WD.
Group A was Absolutely thrilling with the battle between the Stag/Ultra Evo 6 of Ainsley Lochan & Scott Sheppard and the Castrol/ Rallymac Evo 6 with Barry McKenzie & Max Jallai going guns right to the end , Ainsley got off the First Stage with 2.13sec followed by Fawaz Mohammed in the Castrol Evo2 with the same time and this looked like the competition was going to be between these two teams but Barry got the hang of his clutch after stage 1 and joined the fray on stage 2 with a 2.10sec when Fawaz Evo 2 became the next casualty when he went off the road on an Absolute right turn and staked claim to Caroni lands by cutting his own road to his 5 Acres that he had his eyes on, he was able to return to competition after for the next stage after some hard bargaining with Darrel for some parts off the Adopt A bench Evo1 to replace a broken Oil Cooler.
The Stag and Castrol Evos would dice for fastest times until the final stage but the experience of Commander Lochan proved to be the telling point and Victory was his with albeit only 13 seconds to spare. In Ainsleys words After our really heavy crash in the international with the Evo7, we have no choice but to run our back up car the Evo6 on this event and I was really not sure about the handling of this car after having driven the Evo7 all of this season, but we actually laid down our fastest time today in the Six (2.03sec) which says a lot about the handling of the Six
John Powell was in a class of his own (literally) as the rules of the Rallyclub has not being amended to accommodate the WRC spec cars running in the same class as the Group A cars, but without a doubt the Fastest Car of the Day was the Stag/ Ultra WRC Corolla with a superb performance and even a puncture on Stage 3 on the very first corner did not prevent a first overall placing. John had this to say Cedar hill is definitely the fastest high speed corner stages in our Island and it is excellent practice for my team for preparation for Jamaica in December, I am looking forward to running Cedar Hill in October and I am going for a 1.50sec Time!!!!!
Hey John! The boys say they will cook anything you want at the finish in October if you succeed!
Barry I just want to say that this event was a blessing for our Team and finishing an Event in a 4WD Car has been accomplished with pretty good times to boot! we have learnt the Evo 6 now and with the New Gearbox arriving soon we hope to show our true ability in 4WD, Watch out in October Commander Lochan, WE COMING !!!!
