BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE TURKISH GRAND PRIX
If the crowd looked a bit thin on Friday and Saturday, the citizens of Istanbul turned up in force on race day, 90,000 of them making the journey. Total chaos was the order of the day on the roads and many fans simply abandoned their cars on the motorway and walked to the track to get their before the start.
A group of McLaren staff thought they might be late getting to work one day over the weekend, even though they were already at the circuit. Their Mercedes road car pulled up in the car park and was immediately surrounded by a pack of snarling wild dogs, who reckoned that part of the car park was their own territory and didnt seem too keen on letting the passengers out. Eventually, having tried to chew their way through the bodywork, they lost interest and went away.
One man, also famous for chewing bits off people, just made it on time to walk onto the grid on Sunday: none other than former heavyweight Boxing champion Mike Tyson. Bernie Ecclestone looked pleased as punch with his special guest whom he introduced to Kimi Raikkonen as the Finn sat in his cockpit. Quite how Kimi managed to hold the steering wheel properly after Iron Mike had shaken him firmly by the hand is a mystery.
As usual, Red Bull had ten Formula Una babes on parade in the Istanbul paddock, but they had some competition from a couple of pin-up girls from an earlier era. Bo Derek who starred in the film 10 was a guest of Renault, as was James Bond film star from the Sixties, Ursula Andress. The older men in the paddock were all looking misty eyed and nostalgic as the film stars walked past. Looking good ladies, looking good! Talking of James Bond, our very own Christian Horner turned up in style at the Sunday night post-race Red Bull Party by speedboat. Very dashing! So with Pierce Brosnan standing down from playing the part of Special Agent 007, maybe Horner could go in for a screen test for the role.
Jordan boss Colin Kolles has been something of a controversial figure since first appearing in the F1 paddock at the start of this year, but if people were asking themselves what exactly he did, they got their answer in Istanbul. Team driver Tiago Monteiro had terrible toothache and unwilling to risk the attentions of a local dentist, the Portugeezer as his mechanics call him, actually let Kolles carry out root canal work on the offending tooth, as the Romanian team boss is a qualified dentist. Apparently, the job was done without the use of anaesthetic, but as one witty journalist pointed out, driving for Jordan, Tiago is well used to dealing with pain. Ouch, now that really hurts!

GOBBLING POINTS IN TURKEY
The Hungaroring, scene of the last grand prix three weeks ago is considered such a meaningless race track that our boys instant double retirement there could almost be considered a noble gesture! So, what better way to get over that result than by getting both cars home in the points at the brand new Turkish circuit which, on its debut event, has instantly put itself into the Top Four circuits in the world in terms of the challenge it presents.
David and Christian did all the groundwork for their respective seventh and eighth place finishes immediately after the start, when they rocketed their Red Bull racers off the line to make up several places in the charge to the first corner. After that, it was a case of keeping it on the black stuff and pushing all the way to the flag.
Kimi Raikkonen had been making headlines all week in his native Finland, for all the wrong reasons whisper the words, women and strong liquor but whatever he had been up to, it did not seem to affect his speed or concentration. After being mugged off the line by Giancarlo Fisichella in the Renault, the McLaren man fought off the advances of Fernando Alonso in the second Renault and retook the lead before the end of lap one. That was it: game over, win number five of the season to Kimi. After the Renaults faded a bit, it looked as though Juan Pablo Montoya in the other McLaren was going to help his team-mates title chances by keeping Alonso in third place.
However, the Colombian had not counted on Tiago Monteiro getting so excited at being lapped by the McLaren that he rammed his Jordan into the back of it. This promptly wrecked Montoyas aerodynamics and he spun off, allowing Alonso through into second spot.
Apart from the awful traffic to and from the city, the first ever Turkish GP was judged a great success and it seemed that half the paddock was heading for the airport loaded down with a Turkish carpet as a souvenir! _________________ Drags, Circuit, Solodex, Rally, Karting, the Shows, the Girls, the Car you drive...

Turkish GP: Red Bull race notes
Racing series F1
Date 2005-08-21
David Coulthard and Christian Klien finished the inaugural Turkish Grand Prix in seventh and eighth position today to collect more FIA Championship points for both themselves and the team.
After an impressive start from the grid, which saw David move up four places through the field and Christian three, both drivers delivered determined performances aboard their RB1s.
While five F1 drivers retired from the demanding 58-lap race, the Red Bull Racing duo maintained competitive pace and delivered a result that ensured the team maintained its sixth position in the FIA Constructors' Championship.
David Coulthard:
"Well, that was a pretty good result. I was happy with the overall performance of the car throughout the race and, although we still have a few issues regarding the down-force level at top speed, the balance of the car felt good."
"We had some understeer at the start, but made a wing adjustment during the first pit stop to create more down-force and after that it was much better. Otherwise, there were no issues at all during the race and I'm happy we collected three points."
Christian Klien:
"That was a really tough race, really tough. I was pushing hard on every single lap - there was no let up at all and this track needs 110 per cent of concentration all the time. I got one point at the end, which is pretty good I think, especially considering the qualifying position so I'm pleased."
Christian Horner, Sporting Director:
"After the penalty of having to go out to qualify first and second here, to finish the weekend in seventh and eighth is pretty good. It also means we maintain sixth place in the Constructors' Championship which is great, especially at this stage in the season, and we'll certainly be fighting very hard in the next few races to stay there."
"The strategic team, the engineers and the mechanics all did an excellent job today. The pit stops were fast and it was a strong, disciplined performance. The drivers did a superb job and I'm pleased with the result."
Gnther Steiner, Technical Director:
"Our strategy worked well. Realistically we didn't come here expecting very much after our Hungarian result and difficult qualifying positions. Therefore, to come away with three points is pretty good. The guys who worked on the strategy did a great job and staying out for a long time on the first stint worked well for us."
"That was definitely a major factor in the final result, but I must also say well done to the drivers who didn't stop pushing for a second. The fact that there were no significant problems with the car during the race is also very encouraging."
Simon Corbyn, Head of Cosworth F1 Race Engineering:
"Cosworth delivered a solid performance in Istanbul and had no engine problems throughout the weekend, culminating in another double points scoring finish for Red Bull Racing. Christian in particular did a great job of maximising available engine performance to defend his position. New TJ2005 Series 12 engines will be installed on schedule for the Monza GP."
