jtuned.com makes a visit to the HKS factory!

HKS Technical Factory

As I sit on this busy train speeding towards the outskirts of Tokyo, I realize how important public transportation is in Japan. So much so that it's a wonder anyone even buys a car much less fixes one up here. People from all walks of life live and die by the train and it goes to show just how pathetic Los Angeles and our MTA Authority is by not being able to handle the measly 3.7 million Angelinos compared to Tokyo's 12 million. How can a country with one of the most efficient train and railway systems also be the epicenter of today's modern motorsports culture? It must be the passion and enthusiasm that draws these trainspotting commuters to their local dealerships and used car lots. Owning an automobile isn't as easy as it is here in the states. Getting your license in Japan is extremely difficult and expensive and in some prefectures, owners must first show they have a suitable parking space before being able to purchase a set of wheels. As if asking your parents permission wasn't bad enough, try adding city hall to your chain of command.

The swaying of people finally comes to a halt and Daigo Kasami pulls out his ultra techy JDM cell phone laced with trendy decorations and calls for our ride. Luckily for us, Mr. Kasami has graciously agreed to take us to one of the most exclusive tuning centers in Japan the HKS Technical Factory. You may recognize Daigo from our previous East Meets West S14 cover shoot and we are deeply indebted to him for playing tour guide. 15 min and a UCC coffee later, a black Honda Fit swoops us up for the short jaunt to HKS' premier retail showroom.

At a hair over 20,000 sq/ft, the HKS Technical Factory is not only the sales HQ for the Tokyo area but is also a full-fledged tuning facility that professionally installs and builds customers vehicles following the strict HKS fundamentals. Opening its doors back in January of 03', this HKS landmark has become a staple for gear heads in the surrounding areas.

With 4 lifts and a 4-wheel Dynapack dynamometer, HKS TF offers a host of performance services for the true die-hard HKS fanatic. The factory-trained technicians can perform anything from simple oil changes to complete engine and suspension overhauls.

Display cases with the latest in HKS technology fills the retail area and is mixed with various suspension arms, turbo components, and race fluids strewn across the sales floor. Proudly displayed center stage is HKS' TRB-02 EVO which clinched the fastest time at Tsukuba with a blistering 55 second run. Famed driver Nobuteru No One Better Taniguchi pretty much destroyed the hopes and dreams of all other time attackers with a single blow of the HKS carbon fiber katana. The HKS 350Z demo car which houses their potent supercharger system was parked in the foreground right next to the HKS Zero-R Skyline. This special edition R32 has been completely reconstructed from the ground up and houses a reworked 2.8liter RB engine stuffed with a plethora of HKS goods. In the back, all bays were filled with customer's cars and project builds. The diligent technicians were carefully examining twin HKS S13's and word has it that these unassuming Nissan's pump out over 400 horsepower with their HKS GT ball bearing turbines.

As if a full-fledged technical center and sales office wasn't enough, HKS TF plans on offering complete turnkey vehicles for general consumption and is already fiddling with the Nissan Fuga (known as the Infiniti M here in the states). Displaying this supercharged vehicle in their booth for the 05' Tokyo Auto Salon, HKS has definitely grasped the sport-luxury crowd by the horns and gives us one very good reason to stay clear of those busy subway stations.
