The ultra-exclusive Ferrari FXX isnt just any new model but is in fact a development test-bed for new technologies that will eventually filter across to Ferraris future road cars. The new Evolution Package is the latest version of the FXX prototype and represents the culmination of all the test data and input provided by Michael Schumacher and FXX client test drivers over the past two years. With the introduction of the Evolution Package Ferrari will be extending the FXX testing program for another two years.
The Evolution specification is differentiated by its new livery and rear wing profiles, with most of the modifications focused on honing its aerodynamics, running gear and electronics.
Maranellos engineers used information gathered from 16,500km of tests carried out in 2006 and 18,500km of testing through 2007 to develop a kit which will cut the FXXs Fiorano lap time to under 1m 16s (previously it was 1m 18s). The FXXs 6.2L V12 engine can now punch out a massive 860hp at 9,500rpm. Gearshifting takes just 60ms, a drop of 20ms on the previous time, and the gear ratios have been adapted to make use of the extra 1,000rpm now delivered by the engine.
The FXXs special 19in Bridgestone tires now last longer too thanks to a new car setup and new front suspension geometry, while the Brembo brakes, which boast large Composite Ceramic Material (CCM) discs, are more efficient with the result that the brake pads last twice as long. Thanks to the drivers feedback the Ferrari engineers have also developed new aerodynamic solutions aimed at increasing downforce over the rear axle. The FXX now sports a new rear diffuser and rear flaps which have combined to increase aerodynamic efficiency by 25% overall.
The cars new traction control system, developed in close collaboration with the GES Racing Division engineers, gives the driver a choice of no less than nine different settings (plus the off position), selected using a switch on the central tunnel. Its also now less invasive and more flexible, adapting more efficiently to the individual driving style of each driver.
