Found this at http://www.poynton.com/notes/Timo/Calibrate_v._linearize.html
Might shed some light
Calibration is not necessarily linearization
To calibrate asystem or subsystem, you bring it into conformance, within acertain tolerance, with apredefined characteristic.
Sometimes, we wish to calibrate adevice whose intrinsic response is linear- for example, your bathroom scale. This special case of calibration is called linearization. Other times, we wish to calibrate adevice whose intrinsic response is nonlinear. The float that measures the fuel level in your car's tank is intrinsically nonlinear, but ideally, the fuel gauge would be linear. We would like to linearize the fuel gauge.
Apiano is designed so that each key produces a fundamental frequency related by a fixed ratio to the frequency of the fundamental frequency of key to its left. The ratio is the twelfth-root-of-two, or about 1.06. Apiano tuner can be said to "calibrate" the piano: He causes each key to produce the correct frequency. First, he tunes the frequency of Aabove middleC to be 440Hz. Then, he imposes the twelfth-root-of-two relationship between adjacent semitones. The piano tuner calibrates the piano, but does not linearize it!
The Barco "Calibrator" is ahigh-end monitor with excellent calibration facilities. When calibrated, is's not linear- it's calibrated to aconventional CRT 2.5-power function. It's calibrated, but not linearized. _________________ Drags, Circuit, Solodex, Rally, Karting, the Shows, the Girls, the Car you drive...

Like you want to linearize the temperature gauge there Richard... Apparently the stock temperature gauge is crap. I can attest to that after seeing a 2nd gen engine blow when temp only said 2/3.
Check this link. Some good info there.

Or you can just grab the PDF here (same file from the above site)

Rotary engines do NOT like heat, according to the confusing stock gauges. People may think well, it going up around 1/2 but it's not quite on H. Next thing you know white smoke is billowing from your exhaust. The stock gauges need adjustment to reflect an "H" reading at a lower temperature. _________________ Drags, Circuit, Solodex, Rally, Karting, the Shows, the Girls, the Car you drive...

3rdGen7,
It is also VERY important to cool the OIL in these engines.......Alot of guys over cool the oil and run a thermostat to control it running temperature. In other words double the cooling capacity via VERY BIG oil coolers or more effecient ones, and run a thermostat to regulate the temperature.
You might be suprised as to how well your engine will respond to this upgrade and the CONSISTENCY with which you get the oodles of power!!!!
Remeber to always try to maintain constant conditions for your highperformance engine.

Thanks for the info guys.. its for a partner who wants to do his water temp gauge ..rather than have a bunch of aftermarket stuff stuck to his dash.. like me _________________ I hate people who call their pick-up truck or SUV a car.. in that case, my RX7 is a JET !! |
