Victory in the fourth round of the 2007 Le Mans Series went to the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP of Pedro Lamy and Stphane Sarrazin who came through the incident-packed race unscathed. The second 908 was forced to retire following a wheel-bearing problem.
The race started at 12.30 under a clear sky and in warm weather and the relatively big crowd saw Marc Gene speed cleanly away from pole-position ahead of Pedro Lamy. On Lap 13, however, the Portuguese driver, who seemed more incisive when it came to overtaking backmarkers, profited from the traffic to move into the lead exiting Eau Rouge.
Marc Gene stayed in the car after the first refuelling stop on Lap 18 but was forced to make an unscheduled stop eight laps later following a wheel-bearing failure. He rejoined eight laps later but the same problem forced him to stop again - this time for good - on Lap 39.
Meanwhile, the 908 HDi FAP of Stphane Sarrazin enjoyed a clear lead, with a two-lap advantage over the N3 Pescarolo. The rest of the race passed off without a hitch for the N8 car which remained on slicks when a short shower broke out over the Belgian circuit on Lap 107.
The Safety Car was called out on several occasions as a result of the numerous accidents and tangles which meant that the chequered flag was shown after six-hours of racing before the race had reached its scheduled distance.
Although Stphane Sarrazin and Pedro Lamy lifted in the final laps to ward off a possible wheel-bearing problem, they ultimately won the race by a margin of three laps over the Pescarolo of Bouillion/Collard and the MG Lola of Erdos/Newton.
Pedro Lamy : "We had a scare with a wheel-bearing towards the end but we had a big enough lead to lift a little and we were able to reach the finish without any further problems. I am very happy for the team which did a great job. We now need a top finish on the next round of the Le Mans Series to make sure of the title."
Stphane Sarrazin: "We werent completely satisfied with the set-up of the car for qualifying but I was very pleased with the improvements we made for the race. We worked in the right direction and, as usual, our Michelin tyres were excellent."
