New Technology makes safer roads

Technology based on safety is getting more and more important for car manufacturers. Car-2-Car Consortium backed by GM (General Motors), Audi, BMW, Fait, Honda, Renault, a range of in-car hardware manufactures, and several universities have come up with a new feature that will change car safety dramatically.

The project is a program in you car that warns you to brake or slow down when a car is approaching. For example, lets say you are coming to a T-junction and you are speeding down the road, the car will read that another car is approaching and will vibrate your seat and warn you that another car is approaching and an accident is a possibility. You would have enough time to stop at the T-junction before the other car comes zooming by and an accident is avoided.



Because they are expecting all cars of shapes and sizes to have this feature in a few years. Since every car is expected to have thus feature they can also communicate. The cars can share information, like if there is a traffic jam or a fog. The car that is in the traffic jam can warn the cars approaching, so that they can take another route.

According to professor Horst Wieker, from the department of telecommunications at the University of Applied Sciences, Saarbruck; this technology will allow the driver to build a short and long range picture of traffic conditions.� you are aware of unseen danger around the corner and even many kilometers before you even encounter a hazardous situation,� he said.

Car-2-Car Consortium�s system combines three technologies a GPS (global positioning satellite) antenna, a wireless data system, and a computer which interprets the information it receives. The GPS tracks the position of your car, while your speed, the direction you are heading, road conditions, if the widescreen wipers are on, and if the brakes have been stamped on; is displayed on your monitor.

Wi-fi technology is used to transmit and receive data to and from near by cars. Data jumps from car to car to the on-board computers. Then it will build a picture of road and traffic conditions based on information from the several vehicles up ahead. �The wireless system has a range of 500m outside the city and 100m in the city,� said Professor Wieker. "The data moves between cars in milliseconds," he adds.



You will receive warnings when danger is about to approach through messages on the in-car display, audio alerts, and seat vibrations. So you won�t miss the warning no matter what you are doing.

"It is useful not only as a safety system but could also be used to improve traffic efficiency," said Prof Wieker.

500 to 1,000 cars will soon be equipped with this technology as a live trial in Frankfurt. Let�s see how that goes and if any problems arise.
