LaCie Unveils First Bus-Powered FireWire Speakers Design By Neil Poulton

January 4, 2007

First speakers to harness the power of FireWire
Outstanding sound fidelity in original compact design
Built-in FireWire cable provides power
Can also be used with MP3 players

Today LaCie unveiled the first speakers to plug into the power of FireWire. LaCie FireWire Speakers are powered by the FireWire bus, eliminating the need for an AC adapter or internal batteries. Unlike speakers that eke by on USB power, the sleek and portable LaCie FireWire Speakers provide rich, room-filling sound.

"LaCie speakers extend the utility of FireWire into a new domain," said Alexis Kobassian, LaCie Product Manager. " We designed them to be powerful inside and out, working with Neil Poulton to create a unique aesthetic and style. Theyre perfect for anyone who wants impressive sound with a minimum of desk clutter.

LaCie FireWire Speakers take advantage of FireWire 400's inherent superiority as an audio connection. Conventional speakers attached to a headphone jack must contend with noise distortion from the circuitry within the computer. USB speakers vie for limited bandwidth and power, having to share the bus with the keyboard, mouse and other peripherals. And while other portable speaker manufacturers increase treble or bass to simulate better sound, LaCie FireWire Speakers rely on 8-watt minimum audio output for true sound fidelity. Sound can be tuned to individual preference within iTunes, Winamp or whatever the users chosen audio/video application.

LaCie FireWire Speakers also boast portability and style. Internationally acclaimed designer Neil Poulton crafted the black-and-white speakers exclusively for LaCie. Compact design and cables that wind into the base make them easy to transport if needed.

Neil Poulton on the design of LaCie FireWire Speakers: Centre George Pompidou is a steel and glass art gallery they dropped onto the centre of Paris sometime in the 60s. The gallerys esplanade sprouts sporadic lines of towering, twisted white metal tubes, air-vents to some lower level, underground car park or subterranean motorway. Sometimes thumping bass wafts up from the depths. But then again, maybe its the wind. Or all the buskers in front of the gallery. Who knows? Anyway, nice idea for a product.

LaCie FireWire Speakers connect to a powered (minimum 5W) 6-pin FireWire 400 port. They can also be connected to an MP3 player via the included Audio Device Input Cable and optional LaCie power source.

Availability
LaCie FireWire Speakers are available immediately to pre-order from LaCie direct at the suggested retail price of $99. Speakers ship with an Audio Device Input Cable for use with MP3 players (optional LaCie power source available later this month). For more product information, visit www.lacie.com/.
