Jorg Muller blitzed the rest of the field by half a second to set the fastest time on the second day of WTCC testing at Monza on Wednesday.
The BMW driver was the only man to set a laptime under two minutes during the test, and his stunning lap almost overshadowed James Thompson's strong performance for Alfa Romeo.
The British driver was fastest in the morning session at the track, and he finished the day second in the timesheets, marginally ahead of reigning world champion Andy Priaulx.
Thompson was upbeat after the test, which he hopes will mark a change in fortunes after a disastrous first round in Brazil.
"Everybody's worked exceptionally hard in the five weeks that we've had since Curitiba and the effort seems to be rewarding us with some very good times," said Thompson.
"We've made a lot of changes to the car and they look to be in the right direction."
Augusto Farfus made sure that there were three BMWs in the top four again, while Gabriele Tarquini was the fastest of the SEAT drivers.
The Italian was 0.8 seconds slower than Muller by the end of the day, while Tuesday's pace-setter Roberto Colciago could only manage the eighth fastest time.
