Hybrid Technologies L1X-75:
Zero-60 in 3.1 Seconds, Batteries Included

NEW YORK Perhaps it was fate: We were walking toward the parking lot to leave the New York auto shows second day of press previews on Thursday as a strong gust of wind blew the cover off of a little, red roadster parked on a side street. We went back to investigate, and discovered the L1X-75, a 600-hp, carbon-fiber rocket thats powered by nothing more than your 110 outlet.

Sure, the speedster has none of the creature comforts of its Javits Center brethren (you know, airbags, radio, rear-view mirrors, turn signals), but what it lacks in style it makes up for in function. Hybrid Technologies thoroughbred pulls from zero to 60 in just 3.1 seconds as it launches to a top speed of 175 mph and a maximum range of around 200 miles. Forget about our impending deadlines, our editors sending frantic Blackberry text messages that were overdue in the office. We had to take a test drive (watch video here; story continues below):

This is no commuter car: Slipping into the racing seats is like folding yourself into a carry-on bag, but once youre strapped in, the cockpit hugs you with tailored precision. This is a racecar after all: You dont sit in it, you wear it. Slung inches from the pavement, the L1X-75 is designed for the track, but we settled for the traffic of midtown Manhattan. Sneaking into a line of town cars and Lincoln Tunnel-bound trucks on 10th Avenue, we couldnt help feeling a little naked in the center lane (especially with the traffic cop nearby eyeing the cars suspicious lack of license plates).

But who cares. Wed smoke any cop out there with a tap of the right foot (well, not really...). The cars lithium-powered induction motors provide maximum, tire-smoking torque from the bottom of the tach right up through the 10,000-rpm redline. Finally, we found a little side street, empty of traffican impromptu straightaway that cried out, Floor it! And we did.

Slammed back in the seats with our white knuckles gripping the racing wheel, we felt the wind surround us, we watched the scenery blur by, and we heard, well, almost nothing. This baby Le Mans contender is electric, after all. And that sounds fantastic. Benjamin Chertoff
