The World Touring Car Championship will run exclusively on bio-ethanol fuel from 2009.

The announcement came after the initiative was given unanimous support by the FIA World Motor Sport Council, and the manufacturers involved in the series will now help research the different types of bio-fuel available.

Jacques Behar, chairman and CEO of championship promoter KSO said: "Alternative fuels will play a major role in motorsport's future and it is our goal to be at the forefront of this technology.

"With the close relationship between touring cars and their road-going equivalents we believe that the WTCC is the logical platform to raise public awareness of bio fuels."

Cars powered by bio-ethanol will race alongside petrol and diesel-powered cars in 2008, before the entire field uses the more environmentally friendly fuel in 2009.

Once the championship has evaluated the potential types of bio-fuel, they will then be submitted to the FIA Technical Department for final approval.

So why doesn't the T&T Government push for using an ethanol-gasolene fuel mixture or even pure ethanol fuel in the nation's cars. They could derive the ethanol from sugar cane as is done in Brazil. Obviously not all cars currenly on the road could run on the ethanol based fuel, but new cars could. Dinosaur blood is not going to last forever and the Government doesn't seem to be even showing any signs of preparing for the future with respect to alternative energy sources.
