The debut of Chevrolet's Impala SS 'Car of Tomorrow' could make a telling impact on NASCAR's Cup competition in more ways than one, with the 'Bowtie Brand' poised to record its 600th victory in the top flight at Bristol Motor Speedway.
While the Impala would only notch up win number 61 should the latest racing machine to come out of Detroit succeed, the most successful marque in NASCAR has been carried to the brink of its latest milestones by Jimmie Johnson's back-to-back wins in the Monte Carlo SS Las Vegas and Atlanta.
"We are extremely proud of Chevrolet's successful heritage in NASCAR," said general manager Ed Peper, "To score Chevrolet's 600th victory would be very special considering how tough the competition has been over the years. But it would also be even more significant to accomplish this milestone during the first race with the new Impala SS race car."
This weekend's Food City 500 in Bristol is the first event featuring NASCAR's next generation of race cars including the Chevy Impala SS. Forty-eight years after the nameplate was introduced to NASCAR racing, Impala returns to NASCAR competition in 16 Nextel Cup events this season.
One driver not destined to bring Chevy its 600th win should it come this weekend will be current Cup points leader Mark Martin, who steps down from the #01 US Army entry for the next two rounds.
