Fernando Alonso reckons he has a good chance of winning the season-opening race in Melbourne, his first grand prix as a McLaren driver.

Alonso, who won back-to-back World titles with Renault in 2005 and 2006, is one of the favourites to win this year's Drivers' Championship and intends getting his campaign off to a good start with a victory in Australia.

"Am I going to go out at Albert Park and win my first race with Vodafone McLaren Mercedes? We are certainly going to push hard to try," he said.

"I am very motivated to start racing. I always enjoy Australia, there is a great atmosphere and I am excited to get out there and see where we are compared to the other teams."

This year's Championship will see a spate of new rules come into force. Not only will all the teams be using Bridgestone tyres, but they also have to use both hard and soft compounds during each and every grand prix.

There are also minor changes to the engine regulations as well as those governing Safety Car conditions.

"There are a lot of new things in the sport this season such as new rules, all teams running on Bridgestone Potenzas, drivers changing teams," Alonso added.

"Everyone is starting from zero and it is going to make things very interesting."

of course the question is... will the McLaren be reliable? Alonso is fast, but fast and not reliable doesn't win championships...

Kimi and Ferrari on the other hand... Wink
