... and now time for something new for Do-It-Yourself MadMen...
THE ASYLUM!......
Quote: | Here we'll showcase the "Best-of-the-Best" in Ultimate Workshops around
the world... plus Tool & Equipment Reviews... and Miscellaneous Auto Features
for 2nrs and other Do-It-Yourself MadMen. |
Local MadMen aren't left out either.
Quote: | Here's a place to highlight your personal tools, equipment and workspace.
Remember... It's not about how fancy it is...
it's about how focused you are about what you love to do and where you do it.
You don't need a workshop like the Diamond Motors Dealership.
The BEST work is often carried out in VERY humble conditions...
even on a piece of plywood on the grass in a drive-way.
I worked like that for years, since I was a boy...
Thank God things are a little better now... at least at work. Home to follow a.s.a.p. |
Basically it's a place to MOTIVATE us when we get tired and fed-up.
It's a place for us to "dream & dribble"... while we get "down & dirty" in the real world.
Hope it helps. Comments and suggestions please MadMen.

Let's start the ball rolling with the best Garage/DIY Home Workshop I have ever seen...
Aptly named "The Ultimate Garage" this is heaven IMHO.
Quote: | BEFORE... Stage I... 1957-1994.
3-car detached Garage |
Quote: | DURING... Stage II... 1994.
20x20' workshop |
Toolroom... (Stage II)
Quote: | AFTER... Stage III...2001-2003
Garage Workshop and Dyno Room (left),
Parking Garage for my wife's vehicles (center) and
Detail & Assembly Garage (right).
Total floor area is just under 1300 sq ft.) |
Toolroom... (Stage III) After selling all cabinets etc. in Stage II...
DynaPak 4-wheel dyno... 'Nuff said!
Surrounding Landscaped Garden...Space to chill with your friends
Night time...
It's so good that the builder/owner has started a new business designing and building
similar "high-end" garages for the "Rich & Famous."

Hmm, garage?
The plan for my house is to build with every thing upstairs, indian-style, so we can fit
everything downstairs, which includes Karen's Corolla, my company car, MG, HSR, Locost
and the Mini when I eventually take it fomr my sis
If we do eventually enclose downstairs as apartments, the crs will be relocated to garages
on either side of the house, where they will have to be parked in a line _________________

Whoa!... quick reply MG... Didn't even have time to finish editing last pix...
Take a look at the yard above... I think I could live there...
Totally fed-up of working in rubbish, dirt & chaos. Finishing more efficient ToyRoom at work
for Evo suspension & engine upgrade then rwd GSR Restoration (with DIY Body & Paint)
"New" (refurbished) Workbench to do next week. More tools & equipment coming too.
I'll post a couple "befores & afters" soon.
Definately gonna do something decent, more efficient and comfortable at home too.
To avoid mistakes and get new ideas from you guys... I'll post some 3D renderings before
and during construction of the Home Workshop for comments and layout suggestions
...and some pix after construction of Sanctifier's ToyRoom!... _________________ Walk softly... and carry a BIG stick!

Good progress so far. I towed 4wd GSR yesterday to put back on the road until final upgrade.
ToyRoom #1 and workbench will be finished before the end of next week (I hope.)
More tools being ordered this month.
Researching RUST. No Caustic Dipping facilities in T&T. Alternatives = Media Pressure Blaster
(to be ordered soon) and Recycled Chemical Shower (less likely...expensive chemical.)
Also investigating Electrolytic Rust Removal of the COMPLETE shell. Cheapest & BEST
alternative. Got an AC/DC welding plant I can borrow for a weekend to check initial setup?
Quote: | ...I would love to drop the MG and HSR suspensions and get them blasted and powder coated... |
Instant Shortcut: You don't have to wait for me to get equipment for you to do it.
AFAIK local facilities are available for Media Blasting and definately for Powder Coating.
I'll use it frequently so I need my own equipment... If yuh want then just do what I did.
Ask around. Most people abandon their electric ovens for new gas ranges.
Just got TWO (more) electric ranges for FREE. I have a very good technician to service it too.
That's your Powder Coating Oven! When I finish Projects, I'll cannibalize all three; build a
bigger 36" x 36" unit (galvanize sheet, MIG welding & powder paint) and get him to transfer
all the electrical bits. There yuh go!... 1/10 the cost of a similar commercial P/Coat Oven. _________________ Walk softly... and carry a BIG stick!

^^^^dare not underestimate the knowledge of his holiness Thine Sanctrifier
Just a note on tools, I bought some nice bits from Sears, including 'wobbly' extensions (set of three, US20.00), magnetic pickup tool (US$2.00), Magnetic Tray with rubber base (US$10.00), flexhead / bent handle 1/4 drive ratchet (US12.00), finger screwdriver (US$2.00) and Stanley ratcheting screwdriver with extra bits (US$10.00)
The wobblies are very cool. U can attach a socket as normal, or snap it part way, and teh socket 'wobbles' on the end, for tight areas where u need some 'play' Very cool
The magnetic tray is very useful when u are removing small screws etc. Just stick the tray anywhere that's metallic, and drip your screws, nuts, bolts etc onto it, and they stick!
Flex / bent ratchet
Finger screwdriver
wobbly, normal position

Take it easy, padna. Ah tired saying that I am no expert. The info is there for anyone to see.
Reading a little more than average doesn't make me a expert
... or any other kind for that matter.
It just proves beyond the shadow of a doubt... that I can read. _________________ Walk softly... and carry a BIG stick!

Update: Quote: | Remember I said that my DIY Powder Coating Oven would be 1/10 of OEM cost?
Well try 1/50 of OEM cost instead. I checked for a small Oven.
It's $5,600 - $6,100 US + Shipping + Duty + VAT... Over $42k TT???...
A DIY kit on eBay is $950 US + Shipping + Duty + VAT...
Yup! I'll DEFINATELY DIY... For less than $1000 TT too! Thanks for the ovens fellas! |
Here's a couple pix of my Dad's old workbench, before and after "Resurrection."
.................. ...........................
BEFORE: "Naked" with three doner ovens in the background... AFTER: in its new "clothes"...
BTW MG I landed an unused Pressure Blaster on eBay for less than 1/2 price. Pix soon.
Next up this week---> MIG welder (Sale @ 30% off) + Safety Equipment (eBay.) _________________ Walk softly... and carry a BIG stick!

Okay... Back to Dreamland for awhile... or is it really?
Ultimate Garage wrote: | For most of us, the limited size of our homes, zoning restrictions, and the cost of equipment

The Club Garage concept is an excellent opportunity for a group of friends to share in
the investment of creating a workshop/garage for the servicing and storing of their cars
(and motorcycles, boats, etc).

Mitch Herman, president of Motorsport Imports, with the help of two of his closest friends (John
& Kevin), have created their own "ultimate garage", complete with auto and motorcycle lifts,
Lista cabinetry and workbenches, the best tools & service equipment (from Snap-on, Miller,
Kaeser, etc), plus a home theatre with a supporting kitchen to help relax when they're not
turning wrenches. |

Attention!... ATTENTION!... ATTENTION!...
Tools & Equipment purchases:
Sanctifier wrote: | Buy all tools & equipment over the internet.
DON'T try to buy new stuff. TOTAL WASTE OF $$$$$.
ALWAYS buy "Surplus" or "Scratch & Dent" stuff when available... best "Bang-for-the-buck."
Item is usually UNUSED and only suffers from minor aesthetic bruises any DIYer can fix.
EXCEPTION: Welders and other tools with electric motors &/or electronic components.
Judge your risk very carefully in such cases. I prefer to buy new or at least UNUSED stuff then.
Savings usually 33-50% OFF of US retail. BTW that is 60-75% CHEAPER than local price.
SOURCES: eBay... or Froogle (Search for "Froogle".)
Then you can search for BIG BUCK top quality tools like Snap On at bargain basement prices.
Tip: Join a local express courier company... Skybox, eCouriers (mine) etc.
Many suppliers don't ship to P.O. Boxes or to overseas customers. Ship to courier's US address.
BTW use PayPal or a Wire Transfer via your Bank for payments. Safer that way! |
e.g I want a drill-press. 16.5" woodworking models spin too fast to drill steel properly.
Local metalworking models usually cost $'000s TT MORE than woodworking models.
I'm GREEDY! ... I wanted a 20" model... so add about $200 US to US retail.
... and I want Variable Speed feature too. (No belt changes required to change speed.)
... so add ANOTHER $1,000 US to the bill, just for that feature!...
New brand-name "VS" drill-press costs $2,000-4,500 US... x 9 approx. for $TT.
e.g. JET 20" VS metalworking drill-press = $41,860 TT retail, VAT included...
Long story, short. Yesterday, I bought an UNUSED 20" VS, metalworking drill-press...
............ Turn Pro:
.........
......... US retail = $2,000... "Scratch & Dent" price = $500 US
Should arrive in three weeks. It took nearly three months searching eBay & Froogle
but it was damn well worth it IMHO! This "Surplus sales" SH!T works! _________________ Walk softly... and carry a BIG stick!
