Toyota has reclaimed the title as the world's largest automaker, after losing the distinction to General Motors in 2011.
According to sales figures compiled from the first quarter, Toyota sold 2.49 million vehicles while GM was only able to move 2.28 million. Volkswagen also took a podium position with sales of 2.16 million vehicles.
Analysts are crediting Toyota's strong European sales and quick recovery from last year's tsunami as key factors in their return to the number one spot.
