Thanks. Great car too. Superb straight-line performance; especially for that era.
Pity they can't handle as well as the even older, plain-vanilla Vauxhall Viva though.
That would make them "almost perfect." _________________ Walk softly... and carry a BIG stick! |

^ ^ ^ No comparison, I'm afraid. I've owned/driven 2 x Vivas ...one with VERY good torque and brakes...one without (stock)...
2 x 1400 Lancers...1 x 2.0L n/a Lancer...and 2 x 1800 GSRs...(one with...and one without a rear LSD.)
Sanctifier wrote: | GSR's front strut suspension is far worse than Viva's unequal double wish-bones. Understeer is a huge problem with the GSR.
In comparison, Viva's main issue was bump-steer on bumpy corners causing front to "chip" sideways on exit (mild...maybe 6" max.)
GSR 4-link rear axle is noticeably better on bumpy road than Viva's similar 4-link...but has lower level of adhesion at the limit on smooth corners.
So, like Viva, the GSR is relatively easy to "rotate" but suffers from "wild," excessive oversteer when you do...
Terminal understeer did occcur with Viva...but the limit was MUCH higher than GSR...and was not as significant
(or as uncontrollable) as in the GSR, which is a real "plough" even at MUCH lower speeds.
Overall, Viva had a better balance between front and rear levels of adhesion and MUCH better front suspension geometry.
It was super controllable and forgiving...with very precise steering and good "turn in"...and never "bit you" in an emergency.
GSR had pretty good rear suspension...and "not so hot" front suspension. The steering and "turn in" were okay...but not as precise as the Viva.
Power-assisted Steering box (GSR) vs. Manual Steering rack (Viva) "Chalk and cheese"...Viva wins "hands down" for accurate steering.
The uneven "balance" between front and rear suspension makes GSR the loser IMHO. |
Remember we are talking about stock suspensions in each case, here...
All that notwithstanding, GSR is still a great car to drive...and with even mild modifications, many of its shortcomings can be improved.
Sanctifier wrote: | I'm planning some much more radical mods for my GSR that should "tame" the oversteer (with I.R.S. off an '84 Galant Turbo)...
reduce bumpsteer (front strut spacers)...and improve the steering and turn-in (maybe with rack & pinion steering.)
That little lot should even make it better than the Viva. I already have most of the parts, so we'll see what happens...
This may be the BEST...but will be the last of three projects on the agenda, so it will have to wait for quite awhile...2 x Evo 6 RS2's to come first. |

... And here is just about the best looking pair of front and rear arches that I've EVER seen on an EX...
LOVE the lines... I definately want to duplicate this in metal for my EX "GT" when the time comes.
I'll just flair the trailing-edge of the front air-dam, to flow into the metal arch instead... for an even smoother "OEM" appearance.
Sanctifier wrote: | "17s" seem too big for the LT wheelarch. It looks out of proportion IMHO. 17" rims = Slower acceleration too! Not really what I want from my EX.
I'll go with 5-hole, 16" Starion rims... and Evo 6 Brembo calipers (front & rear) too...
Now I know EXACTLY how I want my ride to look... but in Metallic Silver Grey!
