I would like to improve the braking performance on my CK Lancer. I was thinking of going with some EBC Green Stuff disc pads, but I read on another site that these pads are harsh on stock rotors.

So if I decide to also upgrade the front rotors, what are my options. If I go with slotted rotors, I am assuming that the discs will be slightly thicker than stock to allow the slots to be cut and for the disc to still be structurally sound over the long term. Will this increase in weight noticeably affect acceleration?

Would are good brands of slotted rotors available for the CK Lancer (and where can I get them) and what would be the approximate cost of the rotors?

BTW, where brakes are concerned I would rather go with new parts and not used. I don't mind spending the extra money for peace of mind.

A lot of options available... Cheap - to - EXPENSIVE.
EDITED: MISHI, Wagonrunner and Rudman best sources for "CK" specific info.

CUSTOM systems:
Top-Of-The-Line _ Money-No-Object...
(plus you have to change to Evo-specific 17" rims & tyres too)::
Evo 4-9 GSR BREMBO front & rear rotors / calipers / AND Master cylinder.

Top-Of-The-Line _ For lesser mortals & other 2nrs (without having to change rims & tyres)::
Evo 4-9 RS front rotors / calipers / AND Master cylinder.

"Budget-priced" alternatives:
Also look at parts from Gallant VR4 / Lancer GSR (1996 CM5A)

Last resort... look at only upgrading pads... EBC etc. etc. Whichever choice you make...
also look at stainless-steel brake lines to reduce "spongy" pedal feel.
BTW change brake fluid at the same time and bleed system.

O.K. Uncle Sanctifier, you could count me in as one more resource for CK specific info......this going to be my first tech post on Zorce, so here goes.....

Rory, currently on my CK2 I have EBC Green stuff on both front and rear discs.

Despite what everyone has said about EBC being harsh on rotors, after 1 1/2 years of running them, I have not noticed any adverse effects with them. However, contrary to the manufacturer's claims, they do need some heating up (not much, just one hard mash) to bite aggressively.

To answer your other question, I do have Arospeed 1 piece front slotted rotors as well. I bought these new from Maska about 1 1/2 years ago as well and they are holding up well the EBC pads. No, they are not heavier than stock and no, they do not adversely affect acceleration. It should be noted that these rotors are a direct replacement for the OEM and it is not larger in any way, I could still run 13" rims on my car. These rotors cost $863 for the pair.

I tried stainless lines as well. They improve pedal feel but IMO, did not improve braking distances by much.

If I had to give a quantitative rating on what each mod did, this is how I would rank them:

EBC pads- 20% improvement
New rotors and S.S lines- 5%

So machine your stock rotors and try the pads first if funds are tight (they always are...... Rolling Eyes )

Then go for the new rotors and S.S. lines if funds permit.

brakes are useless without the right tires

originally fitted to the car by the OE manufacturer.

^^Yea, that's true as well Karl. For the same brake set-up, I have noticed that my braking distances have been reduced by 1/3 since I started using those sticky Kumho V-700 R-compounds at Dex.

It allows me to come in harder into the finish box!!.... Wink

To all who replied, thanks. I now have a direction to follow.

wagonrunner, yeah I know I have to change the tires also to further help reduce the braking distance. Any recommendations for replacement 195/50-16s? Right now I am running Federals, but those tires are noisy as hell. They have worn over the years to a point just above the treadwear bars and with the onset of the wet season, I think I should change them out now.

yup, Andy at minicty autovillage sells EBC. if he doesn't have in stock, you can ask him to locate for your vehicle.

I can't recommend any particular tyre.
my tyre purchasing criteria is 205/60/14, Treadware > 320.
what has been working for me is driving according to experience, and conditions.

Well Andy can source the pads for you, but if it is a pad he is not accustom to, then he will insist on a pad traceout on a peice of paper.

This happened to me. When I said Lancer front, I ended up getting a pair of MIVEC pads......bigger than regular lancer pads.

The best thing U can do is download the catalouge here:

Then compare the catalouge's dimensions to a traceout of your pad.
