|
|
Sheldon Bissessar, Trinidad & Tobago’s fastest driver and World Record Holder will be attempting to break the IHRA world record this weekend at the U.S. Presidential Cup at Maryland International Raceway, Budds Creek Maryland.
The event will take place from Friday September 25th to Sunday September 27th and will feature an average of five to six hundred of the fastest cars in the world. The U.S. Presidential Cup is IHRA’s most prestigious event and the track facility is one of the best and fastest in the world.
Qualifying for this event will be extremely difficult due to the high caliber of drivers participating in this competition. World record holder, Troy Stone and former world record holder Eddie Careccia would also be vying for top spots.
Sheldon says that he as well as crew chief Aaron Sipple are prepared to set the world record. The dragster has been totally upgraded using some of the most advanced technology and equipment available in the drag racing industry. This is necessary when racing against world champions whose cars also utilize cutting edge equipment and technology.
Engineering improvements and technological advances in the design and manufacture of racecar parts and equipment have increased horsepower to an even more dangerous level. The dragster driver is now faced with, challenges such as violent tire shake, increased g-forces in excess of 3 to 4, increased rates of acceleration and higher top speeds. Maneuvering machines such as these has become very difficult for drivers including overcoming the fear factor. _________________ Drags, Circuit, Solodex, Rally, Karting, the Shows, the Girls, the Car you drive...

Hey peeps! So we flew in to Miami from T&T then on to NJ. After an hour's drive or so we were at Freehold, NJ. You know you're liming with hardcore drag racers when the Mall is named "Freehold RACEWAY Mall". Apparently it's got something to do with horseracing in Freehold, NJ- hometown of Tony Gentile, racer and member of the PTRT Team. We also visited the outlet mall just 10 miles from Tony's shop where the shopping is affordably good- the ladies will love it.
On the way we met the boys from Dog Box tuning in NJ and took a few shots of their 8-sec EVO. Sheldon and driver Alex were comparing notes and we all agreed that their car was properly done - cage, frame, chutes, the works. Ever seen a Ford 9" diff on an Evo? And wait till you see the size of the turbo! After the shoot, it was time to grab a quick shower & snooze and start our trek to Maryland.
So, after 7 hours of flying from T&T, one gruelling day at the MALL and another four hours of driving, we are finally here! I hear qualifying is scheduled to start either at 4 or 7pm so I think our next move is to the track here at Budd's Creek (MIR). _________________ Drags, Circuit, Solodex, Rally, Karting, the Shows, the Girls, the Car you drive...

Loads of qualifying today but Sheldon got wheelspin and did not get a clean run. No more runs were allowed for the night. Same thing (wheelspin, no hook) happened to the present record holding driver Troy Stone on his pass. Present Top Dragster record I think is a 5.86.
Two more qualifying runs tomorrow so we are hoping for a good pass. Crew Cheif Aaron Sipple and Sheldon are confident that a run tonight would have been a record breaker with the extra rubber and track prep put in for the top fuel dragsters that ran tonight (4.6 in the qtr etc.). Plus the air was nice and cold. The track was finally hooking.
The Pro Mod Record was broken tonight as well as Tony Lang running a 5.88 @ 243mph in his door-slammer Corvette. Tomorrow will be rocking! _________________ Drags, Circuit, Solodex, Rally, Karting, the Shows, the Girls, the Car you drive...

After the first round of qualifying, Sheldon ran 5.80 @ 230mph, qualifying 2nd behind Troy Stone who qualified with a 5.79. Sheldon's 1/8th mile was a record 3.726 @ 194mph!! The 60ft time was 0.951. One more qualifying pass left... _________________ Mowgli : "Use the Zorce Princess Kaveshla!"...

BUDDS CREEK, Md. - 1 p.m. - Racing is on a (hopefully brief) rain delay at Maryland International Raceway.
A light sprinkle started about 15 minutes ago, bringing things to a halt part way through the third qualifying session for Top Sportsman.
Weather radar initially showed just a thin band of showers, which should pass through quickly, but more patches of precipitation are now popping up in previously clear areas.
We'll let you know when the situation changes. _________________ Mowgli : "Use the Zorce Princess Kaveshla!"...

BUDDS CREEK, Md. - 4 p.m. - The apparent "window" never materialized and the remainder of Saturday's racing has been cancelled.
The rain stopped several times and the track got dry enough to start running the jet dryers a couple of those times, but in the end Mother Nature won the battle.
All fields are set and eliminations will continue on Sunday.
The forecasts for tomorrow offer a strong likelihood that racing will be possible.
Racing will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday, weather permitting. Events will follow the original Sunday schedule and run order.
The Elite 8 Pro Stock Shootout, originally scheduled for today, will probably be run during qualifying at Rockingham, though no official announcement to that effect has been made yet. _________________ Mowgli : "Use the Zorce Princess Kaveshla!"...

Bissessar's car got a bit loose on the top end, but it was a tame run compared with the wild up-on-two-wheels ride he had during qualifying Friday.

Well guys, there WILL be a next time... the final IHRA event is at Rockingham at the end of October. Sheldon hopes to break the IHRA World record there.
In the Grand scheme of things:
1) This is the first real 1/4 mile test of the car with the new (M5) supercharger setup, last config was another supercharger (Kobelco 1471) which is totally different drive/tune/delivery.
2) The 3.72 1/8 mile time may well be the fastest Top Dragster time EVER. Certainly for IHRA, even Troy Stone who ran a 3.75 1/8 time in his top qualifying pass agreed that the car was "haulin a$$" as he put it.
3) Sheldon's car was the only Top Dragster machine to dial in AND run below 6 seconds, everyone else was trying to play it safe, whereas Sheldon had two main objectives- see how fast it would run and break the record.
4) Sheldon's #2 qualifying was just 0.01s off the leader.
5) Had Sheldon run 5.86 instead of 5.87 on his hairy elimination pass it would have been considered as a good enough back up pass to the 5.80 run before and would have taken down the record of 5.86 presently held by Troy Stone. _________________ Drags, Circuit, Solodex, Rally, Karting, the Shows, the Girls, the Car you drive...

And now for the bachannal:
1) The Hoosier tires bought at the last meet in Ohio @ Summit did not match in overall diameter. It was a "no choice" situation (they were shipped there specially for the car) that came back to haunt the T&T Rocket. For the 1/8 mile this makes less of a difference but particularly as you cross 200mph it becomes a serious difference in gearing that wants to veer the car into the wall. We did check with the Hoosier reps who said we should NOT have accepted/run the tires at the last change (US$840+) since they did not match.
2) A roller lifter broke (looks a bit like this:)
3) And we fried one piston. Check Glen/Aaron Forbes at Lubetech to see the actual thing.
In a nutshell, that's the bigger things that were managed, I'm leaving out the ignition and throttle sticking issues that ensued after the rebuild to repair the other major things. All I have to say is Aaron Sipple is DE BOSS and with the help of his buddy Mike and Tony Gentile they had the charger and heads off, bad parts extracted and everything back up together in what felt like an hour or less. Imagine all that went on, without a practice or shakedown run and it still ran within 1/10th of a second of the qualifying pass.
Upon analysis of the datalogger information we realised that the car left the line at 3300rpm instead of 4500 and Sheldon felt that the top end could have been a bit stronger despite the car getting loose. Basically we really needed the 3rd qualifying pass that was never had due to bad weather. Instead we had to go straight to Round 1 eliminations. One more pass and we would have easily been able to properly back up the 5.80 with a pass anywhere within 1% of the time i.e. within the range of 5.74 to 5.86. We think the car itself can drop just below the 5.70 mark if all is perfect. Imagine if the car left at 4500rpm where everyhing is set to go in terms of the torque converter etc. and if the tires were properly matched and not making the run go hairy...
They were running dialup instead of Sheldon's preferred Heads-Up (as fast as you want) racing with the cross-talk tree. This by itself screwed up the works for the delay box which is typically set for the driver to hit the button on the first yellow. But alas, the day was done and everyone was contemplating the value of 1/100th of a second. If anyone here has done dialup racing, you know how tough it is to lose out by 1/100th. Now image doing that with a temparamental 5-second Top Dragster.
Next stop, IHRA's "The Rock" (Rockingham) - for the record! _________________ Drags, Circuit, Solodex, Rally, Karting, the Shows, the Girls, the Car you drive...
