The Australasian New Car Assessment Program has rated the Mercedes-Benz B-class with its highest five star rating for occupant protection in its latest round of crash tests.
We are extremely pleased that the inherent safety of the B-Class has again been recognised with this highest possible occupant rating of five stars, said Horst von Sanden, managing director of Mercedes Car Group in Australia.

Our A-Class, B-Class, C-Class and E-Class all have the maximum five star rating for occupant protection from EURO NCAP and this latest test result recognises the primacy that safety plays at Mercedes-Benz, he said.

The occupant star rating considers the injury measures to the occupants head, neck, abdomen, pelvis, upper and lower legs and the deformation of the vehicles structure. The star rating is assigned on the basis of crash test results from an offset and side impact crash and include any additional points awarded where advanced seatbelt reminders are fitted or a pole test is conducted.

To simplify the crash test results ANCAP* has assigned an occupant protection rating based on an overall score, which is portrayed as a star rating out of five. The more stars the higher the rating, the B-Class has scored the maximum number of stars for occupant protection.

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class is available with a range of engines and is priced from $44,900 for the B 180 CDI and B 200 and the B 200 Turbo from $48,900. The B-Class range is equipped with leading edge safety features including ASR, ABS, ESP and five three-point seatbelts with all outboard seatbelts having emergency pre-tensioners.

I think the Renault Laguna was the first car to be awarded the Euro-NCAP (European new car assessment) 5-star rating because it was so far superior to 4-star rated cars. It's reassuring to know that other manufacturers aren't standing still. Kudos to Mercedes for safety.

Yes, the Renault did achieve a 5 star rating...I am glad to see other manufacturers keeping up with high safety standards, because that seems to be a factor when buying a car of today..

One thing i notice with the euroncap is that they recommends that cars should have stability control fitted in them, despite some do come with it in T&T the cars are left with out. Then again is what model is made for what country and what each manufacture ask for..
