I've actually read about the simulator competition where they took the winner and put him in the Dubai race, proving the point that if you are fast in GT you'll be fast in real life.
I have experienced the effect where you enjoy the joy of driving without the harsh penalties of a real crash and trust me after your first one it all becomes very clear.. Life isn't a video game but you'll be a better driver after playing GT seriously.
One step up from that is Solodex then Circuit Racing, Drag Racing Rally etc. It's simply amazing that they can get all that into the tiny PSP!
