The Golf GTI has been trumped by a special edition that brings 30 more bhp and a half-second slice off the run to 62mph.
The engine can take more, but the hike was capped by the marketing department. The reason? The new model is called Edition 30 and goes on sale in January to celebrate 30 years of Golf GTI in the UK.
Limited to 1,500 examples, the new Golf has been given surgery to hoist the two-litre turbocharged engine from 197bhp to 227. That 30bhp rise almost exactly doubles the 112bhp achieved by the original's 1.6-litre engine back in 1977.
The price however has more than quadrupled over the years. The Edition 30 adds another 1,600 to the standard GTI price to cost 22,000 for the three-door. The five-door is 500 more and 1,300 is needed to option the sequential DSG gearbox. In 1977, its forebear cost 5,217.
