Renault driver Giancarlo Fisichella, who has spent the past two seasons driving in the shadow Fernando Alonso, believes he will be one of the main challengers for the 2007 drivers title.

With Alonso leaving the team for McLaren next year, Fisichella believes he can be a serious championship contender, despite a middling 2006 season.

"I�m confident of winning the world championship; I will be a main player along with [Kimi] Raikkonen and Alonso," he told Italy's Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper.

"I�m aware that next year I will have at my disposal a great car and a great team, who I�ve already worked with for two years so I know them well."

Fisichella, who will be joined by Finnish newcomer Heikki Kovalainen next year, is under extreme pressure to perform well as his new contract lasts a single year.

Furthermore, Renault test-driver Nelson Angelo Piquet is waiting in the wings should Fisichella stumble.
