Tesla Roadster
Is there really a market for $100,000+ electric cars? There is, provided deposits for the first allocation of Tesla Motors Roadster are anything to go by.
According to reports, Martin Eberhard, the nascent eco-automakers CEO, the first batch of 100 cars has already been spoken for. Tesla apparently already had a head start, mind. Prior to the cars official unveiling on July 19 in California, 37 parties had already signed over $100,000 deposits for the buying rights to the Lotus-produced sports car, including investors like Google magnates Larry Page and Sergey Brin.
According to the budding automaker, the Roadster clips 0-60 mph in around four seconds and 0-100 in under 11 seconds, and marches all the way up to 130 mph. Perhaps the most important performance metric with a pure electric, Tesla claims 200-250 miles per charge, thanks in part to power recovered under regenerative braking. Further, the company claims that they are investigating building and selling photovoltaic cell panels that would turn the Roadster into a net producer of energy.
