Hi there,

Ive done a search on this site:

http://www.pug306.net/forum/index.php?

Im seeing a wide range of operating temperatures for the 306 anywhere from 80 100 C.

I live in Barbados and the daytime temp went up to 32.5 C yesterday and my Pug was running at 97C and starting to smell a little funny, Whats the recommended running temp. in these conditions?

I checked this site out:

http://www.peugeotlogic.com/workshop/wshtml/electric/ac306/coolfan2/fanop1.htm

It suggests that my high speed fans wont kick in until 107 C .... which seems odd since my engine stop light will be on before that and smoke will be coming out of the engine bay. This has happened before when one of my fan relays fried itself.

Is there anyway to reduce the high speed fan start temp.

Oh Im driving a 1997 306 SR 1.8 8v

Any comments welcome

I just hope my new 2.0 will run cooler ... still waiting for my mechanic to get around to the engine swap.

If your engine is in stock trim then it should not go past 90 even if it is a hotter day outside........
it is possible that the relay for the fans not kicking in when it supposed to hence the higher temp.
Also i have my pug running on high speed fans only but i do not have a stock engine & also fans come in at 85degrees as well but with aftermarket ECU controlling that. U need to check it out cause your scenario should not be.....you will overheat

Thanks for the input.

My low speed fans cut in at around 92C .... is it true that the high speeds don't cut in until 107C?

fans should kick in on low speed at about 87 degrees & high speed usually at about 97 degrees...if your fans are coming in at the temps you describe you definitely have a problem & u are overheating...maybe not enough to blow head gasket at this point but that depends on how long this has been happening.......your temps now are too high basically....i am very sure of this especially if you motor is in stock form.....

I think that's the bitron unit doing an automatic run on to lower your coolant temp. .... it should only run for about 5 min. But i'm no expert!

I think I might be getting to the bottom of this. I've got A/C and I use ALL the time. It seems that my fans are suppose to run at high speed when the AC is on ..... mine don't and I understand that the A/C condenser can dump alot of heat onto the radiator.

The question is why aren't my fans running at high speed with the A/C on?
Could it be the high speed relay (in between the fans)?

Any input welcomed

I noticed Red Dawg's Mini Cooper doing this recently and he says it's normal. It happens automatically to lower the temp of the coolant and apparently also to lower the temp of the fuel to prevent vapour lock in the injectors...

On the pugs when a/c comes on the fans are supposed to switch to high speed....i think you should check relays between the fans.

Check the relays behind the grille (3). Also, you can get temperature sensor units with a lower temp rating, this will kick in the low speed and high speed fans earlier.
My low speed fan kicked in at 70 degrees and the high speed at 80, car never saw 90 degrees. If the passenger front inner guard is off as well you might want to spray out the bitron box and connector with some wd40 or electrical cleaner. when water and dirt get in there it screws up the way the control unit functions i.e blinking/flickering STOP light, both fans coming on at high speed at strange intervals etc.

Thanks for the info solo.

I've been driving without AC for the last few days and the car now bounces between 90C and 94C .... a relief but slightly uncomfortable at this time of year! Oh and still no high speed fans.

I just talked to my mechanic, they're going to check the bitron tomorrow and I've asked him to install a new temp sensor. I think 92C is just too close to the danger zone .... especially with a new engine (2.0L) going in soon.

Are there any advantages to running at 92-94C vs under 90C

Thanks again for all the info

Last time i had a problem with my car one of the fan was not working and the engine temp went up to 95 degrees, after inspection it was a faulty fan and it had to be replaced. I would say you should check out your car even if the car crosses 90 degrees..I do no think there is any advantages of running at high engine temps..

ok guys....a bit of engineering info here for u....if your engine runs under the predetermined temp of 90 then you ride is not acheiving the correct operating temp for max performance...just like higher temps are not good for your motor...lower temps are no good for it either....you need to solve the problem not run around it...check the higspeed relay or fan itself...DO NOT adjust your temps for the wrong reason...this could make you not run at max performance...90 is standard operating temp....& our outside temp these days are indeed hotter.......global warming....

i thought the cooler the engine runs the better it performs...
