After a recent 25 day trip around Australia, the new diesel-powered Peugeot 307 Touring HDi, driven by John Taylor, has set two new Fuel Economy World Records.
The records, achieved under normal driving conditions, are the Round Australia Diesel Economy World Record and the Round Australia World Fuel Economy Record. After travelling 14,634 km, the 307 Touring HDi 2.0 litre diesel achieved an amazing 3.49 L per 100 km (81.16 miles per gallon). The previous Round Australia Diesel Fuel Economy World Record stood at 33 mpg, and the previous Round Australia Fuel Economy World Record stood at 76 mpg.
Guiness Book of World Records requirements were strictly adhered to for the test, with official police observance for the entire trip. The fuel tank was sealed and only opened by the police officer when required.
The cost of petrol for the entire trip of 14,634 km was only $540.53. Each 60 litre tank averaged a distance of 1,700 km.
Peugeot holds a third Fuel Economy World Record, set in 2002 where a 406 diesel, also driven by John Taylor, covered 2,348 km (Melbourne to Rockhampton) on a single tank of fuel. With these three records, Peugeot can rightly claim to be the builder of the most economical cars in the world.
Diesel is an environmentally friendly energy alternative as it uses less of a non-renewable resource, and the less fuel consumed, the less CO2 produced. Modern diesels have quashed public misconceptions they are not smelly, they do not rattle and are very clean in their emission!
