Michael Schumacher is considering a return to Formula 1 as the owner of his own team.

The multiple world champion's manager Willi Weber told the Mnchener Abendzeitung that the German superstar has shown interest in buying the Toro Rosso team, Bild reports.

He said that Schumacher might approach Red Bull energy drink boss Didi Mateschitz to "buy his second team".

At the end of the 2005 season Mateschitz bought the Minardi team and created Scuderia Toro Rosso (Italian for Red Bull) as a "driver development" team to run alongside A-team Red Bull.

Despite being under the leadership of former F1 star Gerhard Berger, Toro Rosso struggled during the 2006 season.

"At the moment it's just a thought, but I could imagine Michael buying himself a racing team," Weber said.

"Michael Schumacher doesnt want to become Ferrari's team chief," the manager said because the job would require too much responsibility, work and stress that the seven-times world champ no longer wishes to deal with.

Even if Schumacher were to become a team owner, added Weber, he would appoint a team chief to oversee the day to day running.

I hope if he does in fact do it that he does not end up like Alain Prost's team, bankrupt and non-existent. He needs to get a good engine package, Ferrari perhaps, as well as a good designer.

Prost had John Barnard as his designer initially, but never really had a good engine in the chassis. The Mugen-Honda V10 could not match the manufacturer backed engines and the Peugeot V10 was just plain and simple crap. I could never understand how Peugeot failed so miserably in F1 but excelled in rallying and sports prototype racing.

It's going to be 'weird' watching F1 this year without Schumi... I knew when i was watching him race over the past few years that I was watching a legend at work.. and people are going to be telling stories of him for many years to come. I'm happy that when that time comes, i can say that i was priviliged to see him race...
