I assuming u talking about the Cambridge? If so, let me kow and I'll do some digging, cuz the early MGBs were also positive earth

yup d cambridge.....the mechanic did a ratch and installed the batt neg to ground and switched the starter leads leaving the fan belt slack so the generator will not charge because the output of the gen is bolted to the chassis...... only the oil pressure gauge is working the temp and gas gauges are not reading correct.

right, so here it is, n ow this link caters to MGs but the basic principles will apply since the Cambridge and MGA mechanicals are pretty much the same, and the MGB was based on the same tech....
so...check out:
http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/
and click on "Hammer and Spanner"
then scroll down to 'electrics'
this goes into detail on how to switch from dynamo (generator) to alternator, re-grounding and changing polarity.
