I was lucky enough to drive the brand new and exciting MINI Cooper S with the John Cooper Works GP Kit around the Kyalami racetrack. And yes, the car is really an over-the-counter competition car. And it's hot!

As the most powerful production MINI ever built the supercharged 1.6-litre engine pushes out 160kW at 7100rpm via an up-rated John Cooper Works GP Kit.

Its specific power output is among the top 10 production cars on the planet. But there is a downside for those wanting one it's too late, only 2000 units of this very special model were built. And all those for South Africa are already sold before they arrived in the country.

The MINI Cooper S with the John Cooper Works GP Kit is derived from the MINI Challenge Clubsport Series. Top speed is said to be 240km/h. What's more, this production model outperforms even the MINI Challenge racing version.

To achieve its great potential efficient aerodynamics, low weight and only two seats are part of the package. It's optimised to provide everything you need for extremely high speed and supreme agility with aerodynamic improvements to minimise air resistance.

To reduce weight the rear two seats makes this the first MINI with only two seats for the driver and co-driver with a chassis stiffener taking up the space where the two rear seats were removed. Sound deadening materials were also omitted to save weight. So in fact it's race-bred special.

Around the tight bends the limited-slip differential, ASC+T, EBD and its optional DSC offers thrilling and controlled road holding. The limited-slip differential, ASC+T and EBD come as standard with DSC available as a no-cost option.

The MINI Cooper S with its John Cooper Works GP Kit is clearly distinguished from its other siblings by its two-tone Thunder Blue/Pure Silver paintwork and red caps on the exterior mirrors. Air conditioning is available as a no-cost option.
