For all of those who have noticed the e-4WD emblem on the back of some of the foreign used Nissan Marches and Nissan Cubes, this is what its all about.

The Nissan e-4WD is an intelligent 4WD system that selects the optimum drive mode matching the driving conditions. The e4WD system was developed with the aim of providing 4WD capability for enhanced ease of use in daily driving situations combined with environmental friendliness. The e-4WD is the lightest and most compact four-wheel-drive (4WD) system, which is based on standard front-wheel drive platform, enabling 4WD to be achieved through minimal changes to a 2WD base vehicle. The driver can select manually between 4WD and 2WD

The e4WD system comprises three elements;
1) A rear-wheel drive unit comprising a motor, clutch and reduction gear.
2) A dedicated generator used exclusively as the power source for driving the motor.
3) And a 4WD control unit.

System Schematic

The rear wheels are put into drive mode only when required by road conditions such as off-road or uneven areas where additional traction is needed. When 4WD operation is required, the control unit supplies power from the generator to the electric motor and electromagnetic clutch thereby driving the rear wheels.

Rear Wheel Drive Unit

Selecting the 2WD mode on the dashboard mounted switch disengages the rear-wheel electromagnetic clutch, allows the rear wheels to roll freely, reducing the driving resistance for better fuel economy than conventional 4WD cars.

Dash Board Switch

Since there is no transfer case or propeller shaft to the rear wheels, the interior space has not been altered and is to that of the 2WD base platform on which the e-4WD vehicle is based.
The Nissan March and Cube have come with e4WD technology since 2002, and Nissan has also expanded the use of this system to the Tiida, the Note, the Wingroad and the Bluebird Sylphy.

wow.
that reduction i take is basically working as a transmission.

2, it wont be high wheel 4wd, so the output of the motor, should be enough in slippery conditions.
any idea of, dear i say it, rwd hp?
