Shane... This one's for you!... Very Happy

How do you tune an Evo using 91 RON "pee water" gas and still get reliability and performance?

Tried "re-flashes" or "stand alone" ECU's?... Totally satisfied?...
Still had to guess about the A/F maps and ignition curves didn't you!
Even some so-called "plug & play" features are just an approximation using the minimum and
maximum observed ECU signals to attempt to arrive at a reasonable compromise.
How much improvement did you really get?... No 4wd dyno yet... so that's a guess too isn't it!

Outside of some better A/F meters and similar equipment there's little we can do except wait
for Jesse to come on vacation... if he is experienced with your particular ECU...
(ask Nebert about that one and the HKS F-Con.)

BTW... Ever tried to "fine-tune" a GEMS ECU? It's supposed to be a lot of "fun"! Rolling Eyes

One other alternative is to bring down a foreign tuner who is experienced with your model.
I was told by a rally team owner/driver, that he paid over $16k for a foreign tuner from the UK! Shocked

BTW this next option is not for everyone either.
It's so expensive (and popular) now ($995 US), that it's only viable because we have
no 4wd dynos here... but it's still miles better than the alternatives available... Rolling Eyes

Project Evo #3: The Magic Is In The Tuning - Turbo Jan 05.

As I said this is only one way of doing it. There are alternatives... but at least you have a ton
of dyno-tested maps available for you to choose a configuration that is ...

1. Almost identical to your particular choice of parts (cams/turbo/exhaust etc.)
2. Suitable for 91 RON gas to prevent detonation.
3. Available with free upgrades and Service Support available "on-line" and by phone.

This one has "Launch Control" / "Hot Change" function / "Multi-map" function (by pressing a button) and Water/Methanol Injection Control as well.
BTW this is also the only "piggy back" ECU that exactly duplicates the size and more
important, the shape of the signal from the Crank Angle Sensor (CAS.)
No other unit has this OEM data.

Beats "guess work" by a mile IMHO. Wink

E8's for this model harness. Other harness (different pin-out) available for E5-7 from Austrailian manufacturer ChipTorque AFAIK.

Not available for E4 or earlier E1-3 because of different pin-out on ECU AFAIK. Wink

nice read there...great post Sanctifier, problem I see is that Shiv is a hardcore tuner....he is known to spend hours upon hours tuning a car....anywhere from 200-300 runs for a specific car Exclamation

It will still take someone seasoned with 4G63 fuel and timing maps to tune well: be it an Xede, AEM EMS, E-Manage Ultimate etc. Not to mention the dyno time needed, Wide Band rental/purchase.

Looking at AMS and their success (using the S-AFC II, larger injectors, electronic boost controller, fmic, cams, fuel pump, intake and exhaust...near 400 whp. Of course the problem with this will always be the effects on ignition as the ecu pulls back on timing very easily.

At the end of the day it's important to remember that you can get away 'decently' with piggyback if tuned well. The knock sensor will not trigger redardation...the reading from the mass air sensor effects the timing if air/fuel corresponds to a different load than expected...by using the larger injectors with the safc II they ecu you trick the ecu into thinking the engine is under less load and it will run it's lower load timing settings...which ar emore aggressive (still safe) but aggressive by the ecu's factory setting and conducive to producing power.

Of course...if anyone can affort to go stand alone...fix up...but look at Yancy's supra for instance...SAFC-II and ignition control...they make 750+ whp on the supra. This of course all theory though...from reading and talking with tuners. I wouldn't trust my evo (one day Rolling Eyes ) with anyone except someone live Shiv, or the guys at Turbo Trix, AMS etc. I say pay them well....pay them once...and done.

EXACTLY!!!... I can't afford to bring Shiv here to tune my car.
RallyMac paid a UK tuner $16,000 to come here to tune his Evo 6 (ex Peter Morris)
BTW I've seen it. Sweet for days. Barry said (with "butt" dyno) it feels 30% stronger now.

So now you have a very wide variety of 'maps' for a wide range of combinations; not so?

... with no 4wd dyno here yet, it's still very much a guessing game.
That's why I would go Xede first... Support from a Pro, and plenty proven 'maps'

BTW the new S.M.A.R.T. kit for Xede includes Wideband and OBDII reader, etc. etc.
... plus more maps and free software upgrades too.
Supposed to give even more flexibility and milage for the street too. Wink
