Canadian Grand Prix dropped from 2009 Formula One calendar
PARIS The Canadian Grand Prix has been dropped from the 2009 Formula One calendar.
FIA, the governing body of auto racing, has ratified its schedule for the coming season and left the Montreal race off the list. The inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has been added to schedule in November while the Turkish Grand Prix has been slotted in for Montreal's traditional June date.
It's not the first time the Montreal race has fallen off the radar.
In 2003, Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone announced the race had been dropped from the 2004 calendar because of an impending federal ban on tobacco advertising. But the race went ahead.
Canada has had a stop on the Formula One circuit since 1967. Montreal became the race's permanent home in 1978.
The move means there will be no F-1 race in North America next year. The U.S. GP was dropped from the F1 schedule last season. There will be 18 races in 2009.
