Yay! Got the roof done!
This past weekend, I went up and put on the leeward side of the roof. I'm fully covered now!
One step closer to returning to my hideaway for good...
One might notice that the previous side is a wooden structure, but the new side is metal... what can I say? Hybrid? Cyborg? (Who cares? ...whichever guest looks up and makes some silly remark, will promptly: 1. sleep under the trees; and, 2. walk back out to the village... )
What can I say? While I love wooden construction, steel is cheaper now, and all I and a buddy had to do was:
borrow a generator;
drill holes;
bolt.
Real easy.
The next step is to mount up the guttering on the lee side and hook it up to feed the tanks. I added another tank, so the house now has a 1,200 gallon water storage capacity - perfect for Wagonrunner's visits (I was told he likes to drink a lot
)
Before I can do that, I must first trim the steel wossnames I used as rafters. (They are referred to as purlins or purloins, but I can honestly tell you that I did not steal them - but I can appreciate the reason why they are so named, for I had to steel myself when I heard the prices some places were calling for them... so I can quite understand it if some folks, in order to acquire them, had to resort to purloining them )
I got 30-foot purlins... and the roof was 25 feet. (Anybody wants 5 feet long purlins?)
I used six as rafters, and three fall exactly where I would like a little covered work-area on the side... so, I'm thinking of trimming the other three, and using them to extend the remaining three to get my shed...
Building this roof was barrels of fun.
This barrel
holds up this barrel
which in turn supports this barrel
which supports the bricks, which supports the block of wood, which ensures that while I (with my well-built figure) am on top the roof (which, though it cost quite a few figures, might not be that well-built) the roof won't suffer major trauma - myself as well.
Windows and doors next... (plastering too, I suppose...)
On Monday night (under my new roof) sleep was a distant stranger... why? Exuberant about having almost finished what I started so long ago? Nope.
A Cajuca tree nearby was fruiting, and all night long, fruit-bats kept dropping cajuca seeds on the full-length aluzinc roof. The little, greedy, insomniac flying rats kept this up well into Tuesday morning up to half-past eight. Those damned seeds hit the roof like stones from a sling-shot... _________________ big red rice-eater |

"Beating pan"????? Boy, like you eh unnerstan' wha' it is I'se talkin' 'bout.
De only way dat could be like "beating pan" is if man used to beat pan wit' big stone...
At first, I was certain that some twat was in the bush pelting stone (big ones) on the roof. I even came outside to rock a few back into the bush "from whence they came". When I almost got nailed from above, I looked up and saw the perpetrators. In the moonlight, I could make out the bats passing overhead.
Cajuca is closely related to nutmeg, and the seeds are exactly like small nutmegs, complete with mace.
By the way, I need some assistance to help put up the guttering on the new side. This will first entail trimming the excessively long purlins. I figure we need to do this:

Remember this? spike wrote: |
Here's the worst damage (that concerns me - elsewhere got some good lash too) done by Tomas, just past the 2 mile mark on Anglais. This roadway was supported by a stone retaining wall that was older than Satan's uncle. The wall came a-tumbling down, along with much of the road...
You can see the yellow tape which the road-workers use (along with bamboo) to repair roads in my area. They use these two materials exclusively and readily to bring relief to drivers... I wish someone would introduce them to cement, gravel and stone...
This is what's left...
This is where the other half of the road is...
But, hey, it's passable...

Well, rather than cut deeper into the slope, a bridge will be built instead.
They are putting two wide pillars down in the gorge to support the bridge.

Yeah... right... and how many decades did it take to get around to it?
Anyway, thank goodness it's getting done.
Now then... bush needs cutting. Driveway needs completing. Any volunteers? Think of it as a lime... you just have to sweat a bit in between drinks...
(Tell MG to bring his whips and chains... I may have use for them... )
