O.K.

I've been asked to enlighten some Mini disciples at to the route to a 8000 rpm / 120 hp bottom end for the dreaded Austin Mini.

The zorce potion is simple. The weakest point on the mini crank assembly is the rod bolts and then the rods themselves. The rodbolts tend to give up and cause all kinda funky eventualities.

One mini I know personally was stoped in a race due to electrical problems...a connecting rod came through the block and got stuck in the alternator Shocked .
SO to prevent this funkiness, this is the potion to administer.

Find a used set of Ford Cortina Rod Bolts....with very minor modification they slip right in the mini 1300 connecting rod. a file and a couple of secs ( literally a couple of seconds ) file the shank of the rod bolt while is spins in the lathe. be sure that a calliper is used to ensure that there is a consistent diameter among the 8 rod bolts. This is good for 120 hp.

THe Rods them selves however needs a little more work....they need to be balanced. both ends should be balanced independantly of each other and then the entire rod should be of equal qeight. Although the total weight of each rod need not be the exact weight, the end weights should be as close as humanly possible to each other....that is ALL the piston ends of the rod should weigh the same as should all the crank end of the rods weigh the same. if this is done correctly the total weight of each rod should not vary by more than 5% of each other....

This along with the proper bearing clearance (plastiguage can work while a dial indicator works better Wink ) will ensure a healthy bottom end ....pretty much like Jenifer Lopez ....or Beyonce..... Rolling Eyes

Actually it is with a 1275......030 + over bore.....standard A&E pistons.....The head work is the secret sauce....sorry secret ZORCE!!! that made it different......it will be published in the next Zorce issue.....It should be called, " Champion Budget Build for real Mini-Men"

It ran unofficial 14s.......in the rain!!! Ask prentice when the MArch was a MArch....

Are you insinuating the the new mini,
which was designed by the british at MG Rover
the then parent company of the original mini
and is built at the same plant where the last of the original mini's were constructed is not a real mini.
just because the company was purchased by BMW

What was the original concept of the Mini??? Has BMW kept ANY of the essence of that original concept in their "retro" design???

my bottom end was built like this but i had some minor probs with the ford 2000 rod bolts goin thru the mini rods .. the threads were too big..

my solution was to go to tracmac with the mini rods, bolts & caps & buy some caterpillar bolts ...
holding up good so far..haven't been able to rev it all the way yet cuz of DCOE jetting probs..
took it out on the highway tonight revved to 7500 but thas with an HIF44 SU carb...

Andre.. what about a downdraught 32/36 ?
or should i stick with my HIF44 till i can scrounge up enough $$ to buy them jets?

depends on the state of tune...
but a stock one should be able to handle a 25hp shot

Well....The secret is in the Maifold.....get a good one , and it pretty much does not matter what carburetion is used....rememebr that the rule of thumb with the Carb, is Carb go with manifold.....remmeber that when selecting the nostrils for your fire breathing Mini.

Well acutually, the mini engine and nos go like crab and callaloo!! The sweet thing about this combination is that a little makes a big difference...Rememeer that teh mini gear box was designed to multiply torque from a really LOW HP ENGINE !!! so any increase, is MULTIPLIED!

so the simplist of mods result in dramatic performance increases!!

we can't say enough about the superior desiign. Laughing

nice,,.... right now i hadda open back up my engine to see which pan side playing in the bottom end.. talk bout noise!!!!

i real hoping that the steel crank not damaged..
if it is though, i still have a normal A+ crank to use..

after not listening to your words of advice, i will humbly accept what you initially told me & take off that dotish 2.95 Final drive & go with the 3.44

Still struggling with detonation problems too boy ..
i think some further deshrouding and opening up of the conbustion chambers are in order..

will keep u posted

the problem i always had trying to tune Andre's 32/36 carburetted mini was that the car never idled smoothly. the problem is that the idle circuit of the carb is only on 1 side and usually is closer to on of the two intake runners. on our engine, number 1 and 2 cylinders were getting more fuel at idle than cylinder 3 and 4, the same can be said for the acceleration circuit which ia also on one side of the carb and tends to feed half of the engine more than the other, makes for some interesting crankshaft harmonics.

the design of the new mini is exactly as the british intended, why mess with a working formula. when BMW sold MG/Rover back to the british (for 10, thats right ten Pounds) they sold Land Rover to Ford and kept Mini. the design and layout of the mini is exactly that of the prototype and is only now coming up for its first redesign/facelift. the major change will be replacement of the Brazilian / Chrysler sourced engine with an all BMW motor, i cant wait.

AZ,
when u say "the original concept of the Mini", are you referring to the original Austin / Morris Mini? If so, the original concept as invisioned by Sir Alec Issigonis was an affordable, compact car, which offered the best interior room in the smallest package. That is why he opted for a front wheel drive layout with the engine straddling the gearbox, and also why the wheels were located as far to the corners of the car as possible. Similarly, 10 inch rims and tyres took up less space than 13s, and rubber cones took up less space than coil springs. That way, he could fit four passengers comfortably on a flat floor and give ample legroom.

The fact that the Mini turned out to be a brilliantly handling competition car was just a lucky by-product of the design. Performance was never part of the design philosoply. It just happened that way.

The BMW Mini was conceived with different objectives, but I will leave that for the experts to discuss.....
