I have noticed a disturbing trend. Everyone seems to be running some type of aftermarket downpipe but almost no one has a thermal barrier between it and the oil pan. The factory piece has a heat shield for a very good reason. It is there to prevent the very hot downpipe from super heating your oil. When your oil gets super heated it breaks down quickly and becomes useless sludge. This WILL decrease the life of your engine. You need to either wrap your downpipe or ceramic coat it to prevent this from happening. I am not a fan of wrapping it because it retains moisture and will cause rust, but that is your call.
For those in the US or order parts from the US, the downpipe from Buschur comes with a thermal barrier material to place on the oil pan to prevent the excess heat from being transferred into the pan. Synthetic oil doesn't really have this problem with breakdown, however not using the heat shield does actually show a marked rise in oil temps under sustained high performance driving and over time that will cause problems. _________________ www.ttonline.org

Thanks for the tip Yeo. Stock downpipe still in place for now;
so I really never thought about it before.
Any idea about a name and supplier for the thermal barrier material for the sump? _________________ Walk softly... and carry a BIG stick! |
