COUPE / COUP
coupe 1 |koōp| (also coup |koōˈpā|)
noun
1 a car with a fixed roof and two doors.
2 historical a four-wheeled enclosed carriage for two passengers and a driver.
3 historical an end compartment in a railroad car, with seats on only one side.
ORIGIN mid 19th cent. (sense 2) : from French carrosse coup, literally cut carriage. Sense 1 dates from the early 20th cent.
A coup or coupe (from the French verb couper, to cut) is a closed car body style, the precise definition of which varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, and over time. Coups are often hardtopped sports cars or sporty variants of sedan (also known as saloon; see American and British English spelling differences) body styles, with doors commonly reduced from 4 to 2, and a close-coupled interior (i.e. the rear seat placed further forward than in a standard sedan) offering either two seats or 2+2 seating (space for two passengers in the front and two occasional passengers or children in the rear). Before the days of motorized vehicles, the word referred to the front or after compartment of a Continental stagecoach.

"We're not entirely sure this is a good thing, as the Legacy has gone from understated confidence to a jumble of incomplete ideas (Chrysler Sebring hawkeye headlamps, chrome-happy "wing" grille, hulking flared fenders to emphasize the car's all-wheel drive) that fail to live in complete harmony with each other."

"In addition to the limited production of Aspen White, color availability will also include World Rally Blue Mica, Dark Gray Metallic and Obsidian Black Pearl. But at a price as competitive as its nature, don't wait too long -- or it will only come in shoulda, woulda and coulda."
