Picked up a used rotary engine from the bamboo about 2 months now... dropped the car by Shaun Ready for the engine installation... The used engine I bought looks like it may have been from a JDM Mazda 929 since the intake manifolds etc. were all different. The engine also came with an auto trans which we had the engine dealer take off before installation. Shaun Ready had the engine installed and ready for firing in about 4 days.

We promptly ran into electricals and other popular "when the car parked down too long" problems and I ended up taking the car to Ram Beharry (Superman 2nd. Gen Race Car) for diagnosis. After 2 days, Ram's electrician and mechanics got everything running! Kudos to Ram for his excellent work.

I went to Ram's workshop with a brand new Turbo2001 (soon to become PowerMaster) battery in hand and got it fired up. A few small things needed like new radiator hoses, vacuum lines for the wastegate and some bigger things like NO BRAKES and an oil leaking turbo to sort out.

After towing this car to one or two carshows, it was absolutely great to hear the rotors start and even better to drive it around the yard by Ram.

We thought the brake booster might have been totalled but our lack of brakes was solved by fixing the brake pedal linkage and turning around the one way valve on the vacuum line leading to the booster. Laughing Since then the brakes have been getting better. If not, a standard Mazda brake booster (also found on Mazda B-series pickups) can be had brand new on the cheap. We are also looking at EBC Green Stuff brake pads available at QuickBits (inside Miniciti, Valpark).

Ran through cooling system - changed radiator hoses, installed new fan belts (2 on the pulley - rotaries are notorious for stripping them), new radiator cap, new overflow hose, 'modified' cowl Laughing etc.

Fixed a few electrical issues... got brake lights and boost gauge light sorted and working at Doodnath's Auto Electrical on Aranguez Main Road in a matter of 5 minutes. Way to go Doodnath! Yes this is the same Doodnath who campaigns the yellow SR20DET powered 120Y Wagon in Pro Drag Racing. While at Doonath's we noticed the air filter was really dirty so I was off again to find one.

A week after the car was back on the road, I picked up a slight hesitation which turned into a sputter and eventually prevented me from crossing 4000rpm, getting into +ve boost or free revving cleanly. I spoke to Ram Beharry who assured me that everything was ok since there was no smoke or temperature issues with the engine and... we were also only at the stock turbo boost level (5lbs).

Ran through ignition system - fixed electricals going to coil, changed plug wires (bright red 8mm), changed plugs ($250) BUR7EQ and BUR9EQ as per stock spec. Rotary plugs are quite interesting, they come with a fixed gap setting and four leads around the plug head. Apparently if you use standard design plugs, the head goes in too far and can be damaged or decapitated resulting in plug and rotor apex seal damage. The only place that stocked rotory plugs (that I could find in a day) was Sherriff's Auto Supplies in San Fernando. After confirming that ignition wasn't the problem (new plugs/wires etc.) we tried the fuel filter.

Surely enough, it was filled with a slimy mix of gasolene and mud. I headed to DT's Auto Supplies in Arima where I got me a generic high pressure inline fuel filter for $25 and for safety, a new generic Air Filter (until a K&N dealer replaces it for me) for $120.

A dirty fuel filter means that the gas tank is surely filled with crap as well, so a tank cleaning is now on our maintenance schedule. This will take about 3 days to get done after we take the tank out as the tank will be cleaned and re-treated with a new coating that takes 2 days to cure. So fator 5 days for everything.

Needless to say we replaced the filter. Smoother revving came back but still there was nasty sputters at 4000+ rpm. It follows that the injectors were now dirty. At $25 a filter, I figure we'll change it once a month until we get the tank cleaned. In hindsight I should have remembered to change the fuel filter from the get-go.

The new task at hand was getting the injectors cleaned. Ram Beharry was gracious enough to loan me two stock 550cc injectors (stock S4/13B-T carries four) in case we were willing to install it ourselves. After removing the intercooler assembly at 9pm, we were not. We decided to try something easier first getting the injectors cleaned without removing them.

The next day, I took the car to John's Garage, located on the Churchill Roosevelt Highway and easily spotted by the numerous examples of Mercedes machinery on the compound. Yes, John is a Benz specialist. John started by re-routing the fuel return lines which let the fuel pump circulate gas into the tank and thus isolated the injectors. Next he pumped some Bar's Cleaner (available at Erl's Caribbean in O'Meara Industrial Estate or your regular parts place) into the injector rail to free the sticking needles. After that we plumbed a full can of injector cleaner into the system as the car idled away running on the actual cleaner from the can.

When it was finally finished and the engine cut off, the fuel lines were re-routed once more to their standard locations and John told me to give it a try. A few CLEAN free revs in the garage inspired me to take it around the block. I came back about 10 minutes later with a healthy rotary and a massive grin. Kudos to John!

here's the timeslip from the first run with the pulsar...

Considering the conditions were damp/wet 15.5 ain't bad for 5lbs of boost and tires that have been sitting around doing nothing for the last 2 years...

Of course the Pulsar aborted the run due to a hose blowing off, saving us the obvious licks... Laughing
