just thought you guys might be intrested in this..........
Mitsubishi Motors is conducting a service campaign on 1,534* Lancer Evolution models in the UK only (Lancer Evolution 4, 5, 6, 6.5 (MY 97, 98, 99, 00)), to replace the rear upper suspension arm (both left and right) which may be affected by corrosion due to exposure to de-icing agents.
This is not a safety campaign.
We have received no reports of this concern from any other markets.
The affected part is no longer in production, and was not fitted to any other models.
Although this is not a safety recall (but a service campaign), owners will be contacted by letter.
What are the details of this campaign?
This campaign simply involves the replacement of the rear suspension upper arm (both left and right) on certain Lancer Evolution models. This aluminium part may have corroded due to prolonged exposure to rock salt, which is used in high quantities as a de-icing agent in the UK.
Q.Are any components from the front suspension affected?
A.No.
Q.Is this a safety recall?
A.No this is a service campaign although customers will be contacted by letter.
Q.Any accidents or injuries caused by this concern?
A.No accidents or injuries have been reported.
Q.What could happen in the worst-case scenario?
A.The rear suspension upper arm may crack due to corrosion this would be noticeable to the driver as an unusual noise would be audible whist driving. If left un-repaired, the cracked part may break over time.
Q.What is the countermeasure?
A.Replace the relevant part with redesigned parts.
MY Model Model Code Affected Units
97 Lancer Evolution 4 CN9A 387
98 Lancer Evolution 5 CP9A 300
99 Lancer Evolution 6 CP9A 644
00 Lancer Evolution 6.5 CP9A 203
Q.Are the above figures official/regular imports or do they include grey imports as well?
A.All affected vehicles that have been registered in the UK the above figures are the result of a cross-check of all affected VIN numbers with the UK authorities (VOSA) registrations database. Therefore unofficial imports, which were registered in the UK, are also subject to this campaign.NOTE: A total of 535 (Lancer Evolution 6 and 6.5) were imported via the Colt Car Company (CCC), the official Mitsubishi Motors importer in the UK market. The majority of the vehicles subject to this campaign were therefore not imported via CCC but through other channels. Nevertheless, in good faith, all owners of vehicles subject to this campaign will be contacted, regardless of how their vehicles entered the UK.
Q.Are vehicles imported via unofficial channels also subject to this service campaign?
A.Yes. As the manufacturer of the affected vehicles, our good faith in replacing the affected part is not dependant upon when, or through which channel the car was originally imported into the UK. Based upon the registrations information supplied by the UK authorities (VOSA), customers we will be contacted by letter.NOTE: A total of 535 (Lancer Evolution 6 and 6.5) were imported via the Colt Car Company (CCC), the official Mitsubishi Motors importer in the UK market. The majority of the vehicles subject to this campaign were therefore not imported via CCC but through other channels. Nevertheless, in good faith, all owners of vehicles subject to this campaign will be contacted, regardless of how their vehicles entered the UK.
Q.This is a UK-only action, why are no other markets affected?
A.We have not received any product quality reports from other markets.
Q.Were these vehicles not sold outside the UK?
A.Yes, but in small numbers only mainly to enthusiast on a SVTA basis, or in some cases for rallying use only (unregistered cars).
Q.Will you carry out a service campaign in other markets if you receive report of similar symptoms?
A.We take all quality-related reports seriously in all markets. If concerns are brought to our attention either through our own internal quality monitoring or through reports from the market we would clearly investigate these as a matter of course. Based upon the outcome of these investigations we would take appropriate action.
Q.How can you be sure that the same de-icing agent/salt content is not used in other markets too?
A.We believe that the dry rock salt used on UK roads for de-icing purposes has a more corrosive effect than the wetted salt or brine which is used for similar purposes in most European countries. This, combined with the fact that we have only received quality reports from the UK leads us to believe this concern is UK specific. If evidence emerges to the contrary we will take the appropriate action.
Q.How was this concern identified?
A.Through product quality reports from the UK market we have received NO reports from any markets other than the UK.
Q.How long will the corrective action take?
A.2.8hrs
Q.Will you be contacting customers?
A.Yes although not a safety recall we will inform customers by letter.
Q.What is the cost of this action?
A.As a policy we do not disclose this information. _________________ #69
