Sheldon Bissessar at Summit MSP, Norwalk, OH 24-25oct09

Hey guys, I am posting this message from the MEDIA CENTER at the Summit Motorsports Raceway here in Norwalk Ohio! I've got a brilliant view of the entire quarter mile from the 60-working facility. Each station has power, and an ethernet connection and the room is equipped with wireless networking.

I'll be in and out shooting for a bit so look out for updates as the day progresses. I think Sheldon's first qualifying pass is scheduled to be around 2pm. There are over 1500 competitors here and this particular meet is in fact known for being the largest event in the USA for the Sportsman class dragsters. Of course Sheldon will be competing in the Extreme Dragster (1/8-mile) category which allows the Top Dragster type racecars to run. Today's meet is Halloween themed so all of the officials are in costume.

Right now there are six lanes of Pro street cars (1/8-mile) lining up to race, roughly about 50 cars on the grid right now and the pit areas are both filled. Bear in mind this Raceway is probably around 6-8 times the size of Price Plaza in Chaguanas, Trinidad. It's going like clockwork with runs literally a minute or less apart.

Yes, it is a Volvo... with a V8 and the full works...

Nice dual display for the competitors and spectators alike. There's also a display on the reverse side of the main scoreboards for the benefit of those parked in the pits.

So everything has been running late as rain has seriously been hijacking the proceedings.

Sheldon finally got a run in around 5pm, making the first pass of his group with some tire shake and loads of wheelspin. The ambient temps were in the 40s and the track was cold. After their pass, officials went out and re-did track prep since the other can had a leak about 2/3rds of the way up. But at least it's just round one of qualifying. So far Dave Jamison in the Lake Erie Monster Top Dragster has got the number one spot with a 3.90. Sheldon has run faster than that here before so it's just a matter of setup.

Rain just came down in a big way and the Jet dryer is out there again. I don't want to know what their gas bill for that thing is like but I'm sure they cross US$4k for the day already. They are taking a break to let the kids do some halloweening then resuming in about 2 hours.

Hmmm... k then...

So Sheldon just has to nail his second qualifying run and he could easily qualify number one... We've been invited to lime with the Lake Erie Dragster crew and eat some trackside BBQ. They keep referring to him as "the famous guy from Trinidad". Hopefully it'll be on tonight but if not it looks like early tomorrow for the final qualifying run before competition begins. Will keep you guys posted.
