Exclusive performance and style

Press Release

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced a new limited-production Nissan GT-R SpecV model, which goes on sale at seven specially selected Nissan dealers throughout Japan on February 2, 2009. The GT-R SpecV is targeted specifically at enthusiast drivers who desire race car-level performance in a street-legal vehicle.

Developed around the multi-dimensional Nissan GT-R sports car, which was introduced just more than one year ago to universal global acclaim, the new SpecV model builds on the original's "ultimate supercar that anyone can enjoy driving anywhere, at anytime" philosophy - taking it to an entirely new level of "oneness between man and machine." The SpecV model includes unique body, interior and performance equipment and modifications, raising the GT-R's unmatched performance to even higher levels.

The GT-R SpecV's new exterior features include a carbon fiber rear spoiler, a carbon fiber grille, and carbon fiber brake ducts. The SpecV is available exclusively in Ultimate Black Opal (RP) body color. Inside, the SpecV's unique two-seat interior (non-SpecV GT-R models also include a two-place rear seat) offers special Recaro carbon fiber bucket seats, while carbon fiber insets embellish the rear center storage box, instrument panel and other trim areas.

Performance is enhanced with a new high gear boost control device, which momentarily increases boost of the engine's twin turbochargers for greater torque in the intermediate-to-high speed ranges to provide a more powerful feeling of acceleration, while also allowing the engine to operate at a lower speed for improved fuel economy. Other modifications include a titanium-coated exhaust system and carbon-ceramic brakes that provide powerful stopping performance.

The GT-R SpecV is also equipped with lightweight, racing-style forged aluminum wheels that were developed for this model and have been sold by Nissan Motorsports International (NISMO) since September 2008. The lighter unsprung weight provided by the new wheels, together with the enhanced braking capability, an exclusive suspension and high-grip tires, combine to deliver the SpecV's exceptional performance.

The SpecV will be sold at the following seven dealer outlets, each of which is staffed by mechanics with special GT-R SpecV training and who are knowledgeable of racing circuit driving.

Dealer outlets selling the SpecV

* Ibaraki Nissan Sales Co., Ltd. Mito Sennami Outlet
* Nissan Prince Tokyo Sales Co., Ltd. Kamedo Outlet

* Nissan Prince Osaka Sales Co., Ltd. Horie Kawaguchi Outlet
* Nissan Prince Hyogo Sales Co., Ltd. Nada Outlet
* Nissan Prince Kagawa Sales Co., Ltd. Takamatsu Outlet

2011 Nissan GT-R Spec V
Godzilla goes on a diet to become a better track predator.

BY MIKE SUTTON
January 2009

As the hype surrounding Nissans GT-R sports car has tapered off somewhat, the company plans to keep the buzz fresh by unleashing a higher-performance Spec V model on the Japanese market early next month. Based on the standard 480-hp car, which is no slouch for a vehicle topping 3900 pounds, the Spec V is lighter and more track-focused, yet does without much additional gusto under the hood.

Available only in black and with two seats (lighter carbon-fiber Recaros), the GT-R Spec V gets down to fighting weight through the use of carbon fiber for the grille, brake ducts, and rear spoiler, as well as on the center console, instrument panel, and other interior areas. Also featured are standard carbon-ceramic brakes and lightweight forged aluminum wheels (offered through NISMO since last fall), both of which should improve responsiveness by reducing unsprung mass at each corner. Overall, we expect the reduction in flab to total at least 200 pounds.

While initial speculation suggested the Spec Vs twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V-6 could be massaged up to 550 hp, output remains unchanged for the production model and is aided only by a boost controller that allows the turbos to momentarily deliver greater torque at moderate and high speeds. Other performance improvements include a titanium-coated exhaust system, more-aggressive suspension tuning, and higher-grip tires, possibly the base cars optional Dunlop SP600s or a unique R-compound setup.

Pricing in Japan for the limited-edition model works out to about $173,000, with only seven dealers certified for sales and service. The ultimate Godzilla also will ravage European roads later in the year, but North Americans will have to get their fix through YouTube because Nissan has no plansyetto let the Spec V loose in the U.S.

At more than double the price of a regular GT-R, the Spec V will have to lay down some serious numbers to justify its premium, particularly given the base cars prowess in our last comparison test against the Chevrolet Corvette Z06, Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR, and the Porsche 911 GT2. However, this new model strengthens the lore surrounding the GT-R as one of the ultimate exotics, as well as a forbidden fruit for us on this side of the Pacific.

Nissan GT-R SpecV turbochargers suggest room for more power

For a long time now, news of the Nissan GT-R SpecV has been making the rounds, with many expecting the new model to outdo even the mighty Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 when it finally takes to the Nurburgring for an official run. Part of these rumors was the assumption that the SpecV model would not be receiving any significant power upgrades over the standard GT-R, but would instead focus on improving driving dynamics through weight reduction and handling modifications - assumptions, it appears, that may have been incorrect judging from recent pictures taken by Japanese tuner Garage Saurus comparing a standard GT-R with the SpecV.

[INLINE]The image compares the exhaust wheels of the standard Series II GT-R and the new SpecV model, and while Nissan has never mentioned that the turbochargers were different in the new SpecV, its plain to see that the SpecV has a larger exhaust wheel with a flatter blade compared to the standard GT-R.

The finding gives hope to tuners, who are hoping its an indication that the turbochargers in the SpecV will be able to churn out more power before they reach their limit. More importantly, it could mean that the SpecV model actually produces more power than the claimed 485hp (362kW). It wouldn't be the first time that Nissan has underrated the output of its GT-R models as the practice was common for variants of the previous R34 model due to Japans voluntary power limit of 276hp (206kW).

Why Nissan failed to mention such a significant difference between the turbo units in the SpecV and the GT-R is anyone's guess, but it does go some way to explaining why individual component pricing for the SpecV shows the turbochargers listed as a separate part with a higher cost than the units on the regular GT-R.
