i drove to las cuevas on sunday to see what has changed since the north coast was affected by the higher than normal waves.

Las Cuevas beach is now much much narrower, and shorter.
in this pic you can see how close the shoreline is to the grass. also the flag was placed in the water for visibility sake. according to the life guard "the sea has reclaimed almost 10m. and there is no big difference between high and low tides"

another pic of how close the water is. the darker area is 1 foot above sea level, and is dirt. it's the new coastline.

more pics of how far the water has come in.

Tyrico - what is left now is approx 80% of the width of the road and the beach now ends at the back of the trees, with the sea immediately at the front.

any indication - by the Meterological office or otherwise, whether the "high" tide is going to remain - and if so for how long, or if it will recede eventually...?

^^^ may not be a high tide.....if the offshore gradient has become steeper as a result of erosion, the surf will naturally come in further.......in which case, it may be either a permanent new shoreline, or may slowly change back to the way it was, if wave deposition occurs

according to the lifeguards, they experienced a rise in water level approx 30yrs ago, and it reset itself in a matter of weeks.

this is going to be a case of wait and see.

yeah, when i passed through and took those photos, the bake and shark stores on the car park side, were still in operation. so was uncle sam's bar.
i was told on sunday, that the water is nice, but there are stil holes, and undercurrents. at maracas.

I went about 3 weks ago...
Las Cuevas is pretty much how Maracas used to be (yes...that means waves) with the shoreline about half of what it used to be.
Maracas is very rough with a 3 foot or so sink as soon as you enter the water..and the sand in general is much more coarse.

You all believe I never reach any beach when I was in Trini? I still amazed! Shocked

was up at maracas friday 30th dec., and the water was nice. lil foot deep drop as you enter. then sand rises and falls, until just before where the waves break. out there, as well as behind. perfect clear calm water. the currents do pull more outward when a bigger wave is coming, but it generally moves you more inline with the red flags, which is something you should pay attention to.
