We had an amazing turnout at the first Zorce/RedBull GT4 Tournament @ Pier 2. Thanks to ALL the competitors for participating! We had a total of 24 entrants even though we really were catering for just 16. In future we will make arrangements to have additional stations to accomodate more entrants. Using a four player at a time elimination structure we can accomodate as many as 64 entrants in the same time frame!

Anyway, our first round challengers duked it out on an original GT circuit, Midfield Raceway. The rules were simple� Choose any factory production car, no shorcutting the course, no hitting walls or the other player to gain advantage. Deceptive these rules were as seasoned players underestimated younger players and newcomers as they re-discovered the disadvantages of racing an unmodified car and some lost in the process. The real pros and those who possessed loads of luck progressed to Round 2.

The Second round took the skill level up a notch as we moved to a more complicated course - Trial Mountain. Players squinted as this track, with its shadowy underpasses proved tricky as the projector and the lighting of the Red Bull tent fought for dominance. Racecars were now allowed in competition, which made for quicker lap times and called for quicker reflexes, fully engaging our onlookers (parents etc.). The weak quickly fell as the pros were now allowed to show their skill in cars that they were used to driving.

Round 3 was easily the most exciting round as Laguna Seca was ripped apart by the best players who carefully made a series of clean but hard fought passes, taking turns for the lead and mazimizing any opportunities presented. Brent Buckaree was the first to be eliminated by Matthew Russell. Young Brent was awarded the fifth issue of Zorce Racing Magazine. Christian Cozier, a contributing editor at Zorce, gracefully withdrew allowing competition to continue among the four remaining players. Darren Singh disappeared to attend to a Kart and returned at the very last moment to secure fourth place by default. Adam Bose lost to Kerry Phillip but secured third position as Kerry and Matthew advanced to the BATTLE ROUND.

The BATTLE ROUND was extremely intense as Kerry took the first win at Motegi driving the Xanavi Skyline to victory over Matthew in an LM RX-7. Matthew having lost the first run was given the opportunity for redemption as he made the first driver's track choice. The high speeds and jittery braking sections of Sarthe allowed Matthew, now driving the Xanavi Skyline to gain a 7 second lead over Kerry who made a costly slip in the Wilwood Supra in the first lap. Lips were being bitten and tensions raised as Kerry made a concerted effort to reduce the gap during the remaining laps. Kerry regained ground, delving deep into corners as he controlled his car's drift and maintained a high exit speed. Kerry snaked his way right up to Matthew's back bumper at the end of lap three but Matthew had the cajones to hold him off as they rocked past the finish of lap three.

The last run of the BATTLE round was Kerry's choice � the 'ring. The N�rburgring Circuit is one of the longest and most difficult courses in GT4 and Kerry and Matthew seemed robotic as they negotiated the course and stayed within seconds of each other. Kerry, pressing the buttons and using the keypad on his controller seemed much more comfortable on the ring as Matthew, using the double joysticks struggled to keep up. Eventually the pressure was just too much for Matthew who dwindled into a 15-second deficit and gave up midway through lap 3, congratulating Kerry as the official GT4 Master for the night...

Darren Singh and Adam Bose each received a certificate and magazines for 4th and 3rd place, these were hard fought for and well earned. Matthew recieved 2 copies of Zorce and his 2nd place certificate.

The night's Champion Kerry Phillip was congratulated with 4 copies of Zorce, a first place certificate from Zorce and Red Bull and a very special Red Bull Trophy. This token consisted of a RedBull tie pin resting alongside a tiny RedBull car with red headlights in a blue champagne glass set on a podium wrapped in the actual Formula 1 Newspaper featuring David Coulthard checking out the F1 driving simulator.

Kerry remarked that "This trophy seemed cool and relatively light until I found out what it was all about... then it gained 200 tonnes..." Congrats Kerry!
