Last lap drama as Hamilton takes the title!
It all came down to the final race of the season once again and this year it there were no mistakes from Lewis Hamilton as he took the chequered flag in fifth position to claim the Formula One World Championship. Felipe Massa dominated the final race of the season from the pole position, but trailing Hamilton by seven points heading into the race, it was always going to be an uphill struggle for the Ferrari star and it could not have been more dramatic.
Hamiltons title success - in just his second season of the sport - breaks McLarens streak of championship frustration nine years after its last success with Mika Hakkinen. Ferrari meanwhile has secured the constructors championship from McLaren making it an astonishing seven championships from the last nine years.
It was an astonishing season finale as right up to the chequered flag on lap 71, it was not clear who would be crowned as champion. A rain shower ahead of the formation lap saw the start of the race delayed ten minutes and Massa promptly led away from pole position and was never seriously threatened for the race win.
The circuit soon dried out but it was a late race shower that really threw the race for the title into confusion. With two laps to go, Hamilton ran wide and Sebastian Vettel slipped through into fifth position and at that point it was Massa who would be crowned as champion.
Massa took the chequered flag believing he was champion but the drama was still not over...
Timo Glock, running fourth, had not pitted for wet weather tyres with the rest and on the very last lap of the race he dropped 18 seconds and critically for Hamilton, down to sixth position. It was an amazing result as seconds later Hamilton took the chequered flag in fifth position and he was champion.
Massa didnt put a wheel wrong and he will be absolutely distraught to lose out in the final seconds of the Grand Prix. The Ferrari star took the chequered flag 13 seconds ahead of Fernando Alonso who made best use of an early stop for dry tyres early in the race to vault ahead of Kimi Raikkonen, Sebastian Vettel and Hamilton.
Kimi Raikkonen spent the race managing the gap to those ahead of him on track while trying to push Hamilton back into the field. It was really a no win situation for the 2007 champion but at least his third position gave him third position in the championship ahead of Robert Kubica.

Exactly what I was thinking. Although, to give Jack his jacket, that probably was the smartest and most restrained race from Hamilton.
I was on the edge of my seat in the last few seconds. Massa's father must have had a heart attack with his premature celebrations.
Kind of reminds me of 1984 when Alain Prost lost the title to (his team-mate) Niki Lauda by 1/2 point. Prost won the last race only to see Lauda finish in the points and thereby win the driver's championship. |

Glock not aware of championship influence
Timo Glock said he was not aware that he was influencing the championship over the final laps of the Brazilian Grand Prix.
The Toyota driver was running in fourth place, ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who needed that position in order to secure the title, ahead of the final lap.
Glock had decided not to pit when the rain began to fall at Interlagos, a decision that put him ahead of Hamilton.
The German, however, was on dry weather tyres and was unable to keep Hamilton at bay, the Briton going on to pass him at the final corner to win the title.
Glock admitted he had no idea he was in a position to decide the championship.
"No, I was concentrating on my race. I didn't know that I was the magic rule in the championship and in the end, I didn't look for that," Glock told reporters after the race.
"I just tried to do my best, and in the end it was a poker game. We stayed out on dry tyres and for the last lap it was just too much rain for us. We were not unlucky but the poker game did not turn out for us."
He added: "I really don't know where Lewis overtook me because four cars past me left and right, left and right. I was just concentrating to keep the car on the track. That was the only way.
"To handover and help Lewis or help Felipe, definitely not. In a race situation like this, you can never plan before and definitely there were no thoughts about that.
"When you see the laptime, the lap before I did a 1m28, and on that last lap I did a 1m48. It was just not driveable anymore."
The Toyota driver said he felt sorry for Felipe Massa, but he was sure the Brazilian understands his position.
"I think he is the guy who understands quite well that I could not do anything different to that what I did at the end of the last lap. I am sorry for him, but in the end the last race is definitely the decider of the championship.
"But the main point is the 17 races before, and there were more races where Felipe was a bit unlucky and didn't score the points because of technical problems. But in the end, to lose a championship on the last lap is hard - but I tried my best and I cannot change it."

Glock was on dry-weather tyres and it had just started raining. If the rain had held off for just one more minute, Glock would have stayed ahead, Hamilton would have stayed 6th and Massa would have been champion. But it didn't, Glock lost grip and fell back for Hamilton to move up to 5th. |

I am sure everybody who was competing in that race must have known Hammy just needed a 4th place just to secure his championship...Then again if Toyota had swap tires perhaps it might have been different..But its racing and end of the day Hammy took the cake not Massa. |

Massa's dad must have been in shock of his life. |

thing about La Familia Massa is, they KNEW hammy was still out on track
they would have been seeing thesame live feeds
If I were them I'd be glued to the hamilton battle, cuz really, the odds were he could pull off the pass on the Toyota..... _________________

The main race feature was hamilton battle for fourth place..I really thought Hamilton lost it cause they were times the gap widen from 4 to 5..But seeing that overtake had me thinking..That race had mixed reactions as shown Massa family was celebraing while Hamilton side to, so your point is valid were they seeing different feeds? I highly doubt it.. |
