The "CK" brake upgrade that I am most familiar with costs serious $$$... BREMBO!
I'm using the COMPLETE ft. & rr. Evo 6 suspension + Master cylinder + rotors & calipers etc.
For a CK4 you'll need bits off an E5 or E6. E7 calipers and rotors are the same but struts etc.
are different. The only problem with Brembos is that you need Evo 17" rims or similar.
Not all 17" rims will "clear" Brembo calipers. BTW for Brembos use Ferrodo DS 2500 pads.
4wd 1800 GSR (CM5A) single-pot calipers can fit but I found them barely adequate on my GSR.
BTW rear GSR disks may be the same size as your rear disk conversion.
The Evo brakes spoilt me... That's why I'm going Brembo once and for all.
A GOOD alternative is 2-pot caliper off an Evo IV. This should be the best bang-for-the-buck!
This way you don't have to buy 17" Evo rims and expensive tyres.
Evo III or Galant VR4 should be the same. BANzai or MISHI should be able to tell you more.
For even better DIY info + pix & diagrams check here...

Use REAR Evo 2-pot Brembos IN FRONT!... and keep your standard rear disk conversion.
If you can't get... try ol' school 2-pot FIXED calipers... like Lockheed or Girling...
Old Cortina Ghias etc. have GOOD 2-pot Girling calipers. Pads are cheaper than 2-pot Brembos too.
You'll need a machine shop to machine new caliper brackets to match your struts... but it WILL work VERY well!... and you DON'T have to buy 17" Evo rims and tyres!
Also, with the SMALLER volume of brake fluid in the 2-pot caliper you might be able to use the GSR or maybe even standard CK4 Master cylinder for correct pedal travel.
IMHO it's so much CHEAPER that it's worth checking. |
BTW 2-pot Girlings/Lochheeds might still be CHEAPER than E3/E4/VRG calipers.
My $0.02¢...
Comments and more advise please fellas. _________________ Walk softly... and carry a BIG stick!

I was looking at those brake upgrade kits offered by RPW of Australia. Front and rear brake upgrades are quite pricey.
Do you think that the Evo 4 setup will be a more cost effective option? It's a 1997 CK Lancer that I have.
What, if anything, do you have to service when you buy these brake setups in a used condition?
Do you have any idea of costs for a front and back Evo 4 brake setup (I am not in Trinidad right now or else I would have called around myself)?
My car doesn't have ABS, could the Evo 4 brake setup still be used?
Thanks for any guidance that you can provide. |

^ ^ ^ Hi Rory, AFAIK Galant VR4, E3 and E4 all use a floating twin-piston caliper.
Check the links above for more specific details. BTW BANzai and MISHI are better informed.
I don't pay enough attention, since I'm more focused on Brembos.
That's why I suggested using the 2-pot fixed Brembo rear caliper as a better alternative
... or the CHEAPER Girling or Lockheed from an ol' school Cortina Ghia or similar.
Quote: | BTW most brake fluid is hydroscopic (absorbs water) so it's a good idea to change the seals
& O-rings of older calipers. Also check pistons for rust or "pitting" and change if necessary. |
ABS is NOT compulsory. My E6 RS has no ABS but it's PERFECT! I've NEVER felt better brakes
on ANY car! It's SO good that wider tyres will SHORTEN braking distances even further!
ABS can be the icing on the cake for a well developed system but too often is used as a
"plaster" to correct a car with marginal (cheaper) components (like Galant VRG.)
Quote: | Poor ECU firmware tends to ballz up braking effort even more.
If the ABS doesn't "just" lock-up and release... and "just" lock-up and release... etc. etc.
then it's a total waste of time... and DANGEROUS IMHO. |
Case in point, the ABS for these models vary WIDELY in efficiency... (bold = personal use.)
Quote: | Evo 10... maybe the best implementation so far.
Evo 9... 8... 7... in that order... VERY GOOD!
Evo 6... 5... 4... Also VERY GOOD!
4wd 1800 GSR... Okay... but calipers & rotors are too small. BRAKE FADE happens too often.
Galant VR-G 1.8 GDi... TERRIBLE!... One of the worst implementations of all.
Even the ol' school disk/drum 1.4 EX Lancer with no ABS is much better. |
On the other side of the coin... rwd 1.8 Lancer GSR has no ABS... TERMINAL BRAKE FADE
as soon as it gets hot. Only works well with OEM pads.
Rotors are okay but single-pot front calipers are N.F.G!... NOT RECOMMENDED!
IMHO even poor ABS systems can be improved with correctly re-sized calipers and Master
Cylinder and even if ABS isn't OEM installed, you can still develop a GREAT system without it.
