Challenger after challenger tried but failed to derail the Ganassi streak. When the sun poked its head over the Speedway's east banking Sunday, there were only three cars in contention.

At 7:03 a.m. the race-leading No. 59 Porsche Riley suffered a front-end suspension failure, and spun off course with Joao Barbosa at the wheel.

It was the same car driven by five-time Daytona 24 winner Hurley Haywood, who was crestfallen.

"There was nothing he could do about it," Haywood said. "You want to cry almost."

As Haywood misted on pit road, Montoya motored to the lead on Lap 550, and there was only one other Daytona Prototype -- Grand-Am's marquee class -- giving chase, the No. 6 Ford Riley.

Burt Frisselle wrestled the lead from Montoya on Lap 580. Fifteen laps later his engine erupted in a cloud of smoke. He took it straight to the garage.

"I'm wondering if they're putting Holy Water on that Ganassi car because it seems to be invincible or something," Frisselle said. "Whatever they're doing we're going to try to do next year so we can be wearing the Rolex watches."

With the No. 6 sidelined, the No. 01 turned laps uncontested, as Ganassi and minority team owner Felix Sabates watched anxiously from the team's pit box.

"When the No. 6 car broke down, I just kept running (my pace)," said Montoya, who won this race last year with Pruett. "We were waiting for the thing to break down."

But the No. 01 never wavered and Pruett brought the machine home in one piece during his last stint. The winning margin of two laps after 695 laps of competition did not tell the whole story of this bitterly contested race.

"This was tough," Pruett said. "There were a lot of really hard, fast cars that we're up against. You always had to push hard in the car.

"The conditions were pretty treacherous because it was rain, then it was dry, then it was a little bit of wet and you weren't sure to go to wet or dry (tires) and then it would rain again. That makes for a really tough race."

The No. 01 averaged 103.057 mph in a race slowed by 24 full cautions that slowed 95 laps.

Rojas and Franchitti caught most of the rain as the race transitioned from Saturday night to the wee hours of Sunday.

"It was miserable conditions," Ganassi said. "The vision was terrible. To keep these cars on the asphalt is a huge task. It was absolutely horrific."

The GT class winner proved something of an upset. The No. 70 Mazda RX-8, up against two-dozen Porsche entries, finished ninth overall. The car, which was driven by Sylvain Tremblay, David Haskell, Nick Ham and Raphael Matos, started from the GT pole.
