I look it out and this is what i found...

a flying buttress, or arc-boutant, is usually on a religious building, used to transmit the thrust of a vault across an intervening space (which might be an aisle, chapel or cloister), to a buttress outside the building. The employment of the flying buttress means that the load bearing walls can contain cut-outs, such as for large windows, that would otherwise seriously weaken the vault walls.

...Jaguar's timing was not good: the car was launched in the wake of the first fuel crisis and the market for a 5.3-litre V12 grand tourer was very small. The styling was also the subject of much criticism, including the "flying buttresses" behind the windows.

possibly the most elegant execution of a flying buttress:

generally, flying buttresses are used in mid-engined cars, as a styling element that continues the smooth lines of a coupe.....nowadays the flying buttress has given way to engines under glass a-la F430

these still look good tho
