WTCC 2008 calendar is approved
The World Touring Car Championship calendar for 2008 has been confirmed and approved. The FIA World Motor Sport Council approved the draft for the calendar yesterday in Paris. The calendar includes eleven races in eleven countries. As this year the season starts in Brazil, Curitiba, and ends in Macau.

The major news for the new calendar is that Japan gets a round. The Okayama track, located between Hroshima and Osaka on the Honshu island, will host the race. This track previously has hosted Formula One. In 1994 and 1995 the track was host to the Formula One Pacific Grand Prix.

Rumor has it that the move to Japan is to secure a yet unknown Japanese manufacturer entering the championship in 2009. The list for possible and rumored manufacturers entering the WTCC from Japan is long - Mazda, Honda and Toyota/Lexus.

2008 Le Mans 24 Hour Dates Confirmed

1st JUNE
LE MANS 24 HOURS TEST DAY
This test day is of crucial importance for the 55 entries invited by the ACO to take part in the Le Mans 24 Hours, as it enables drivers and mechanics to find their marks on the mythic 13,629km 24 Hours circuit. Its a day that they cannot afford to miss, while for the spectators it is an opportunity to get up close to those who will write another page in the legend of the 24 Hours in 13 days time.

14th & 15th JUNE
THE LE MANS 24 HOURS
The greatest race in the world...and in space! In 2008, the start will be given at 15:00 on the track (by three famous astronauts) and from the international orbital station (ISS) in liaison on the circuits giant screens. Already the 76th Le Mans 24 Hours is well on the way to beating the 2007 record crowd (250 952 spectators!). From a sporting point of view everything is in place for 2 rounds of the clock full of suspense: adjustment of the equivalence between diesel and petrol engines, Peugeots thirst for revenge over Audi, the reaffirmed ambition of the other petrol-engined prototypes, non-stop battles in GT, etc, and a few other surprises!

12th & 13th JULY
LE MANS CLASSIC
In even years the cult of the historic motorcar invades the long 24 Hours circuit. In 2006, 6000 collectors cars were on show in the Clubs zone and there was a succession of races over 24 Hours reserved for cars (or the same type) that had already taken part in the Le Mans 24 Hours between 1923 and 1979. Timeless and simply magnificent.

IndyCar Series reveals 16-race 2008 schedule.

Wednesday, 19th September 2007

Diversity maintained on compact calendar.

The IndyCar Series will again boast one of the most diverse schedules in all of motorsports in 2008, after Indy Racing League officials revealed a 16-race calendar to run between late March and early September.

The schedule will feature eleven ovals, three permanent road courses and two temporary street circuits, and includes all but one venue which hosted the IndyCar Series in 2007. For the seventh consecutive season, Homestead-Miami Speedway will serve as host for the season opener, on Saturday 29 March, while Chicagoland Speedway again hosts the finale, on Sunday 7 September. The 92nd Indianapolis 500 is slated for 25 May, but Michigan, as already reported, is missing altogether.

For the second year in a row, the campaign will begin under lights with a prime-time race, one of five such events on the schedule, with Texas Motor Speedway, Richmond International Raceway, Nashville Superspeedway and Kentucky Speedway also running under lights.

"We look ahead to the 2008 season knowing that the IndyCar Series offers the most diverse schedule in all of motorsports," said competition and operations president Brian Barnhart, "Our schedule demands the ability of both drivers and teams to master a variety of venues and the challenges each one brings with the end result being a true champion."

As expected of such a compact schedule, the teams and drivers will have to face a number of back-to-back - and more - weekends, starting with the opening two rounds, but also featuring an eight-day turnaround between Motegi and Kansas, a back-to-back-to-back combination including Indy, Milwaukee and Texas - and a five-weekend run from Iowa on 22 June to Mid-Ohio on 20 July. The final three rounds also take place on successive weekends.

"We continue to work with others to deliver world class motor sport entertainment and grow the series' constituencies and foster an atmosphere of working for the good of all involved," said IRL commercial president Terry Angstadt, "As we look beyond 2008, we will develop new races as opportunities permit and we will keep a healthy balance of oval, road and street circuits as part of our schedule."

As the series prepares for 2008, League officials are already working on new safety and technology opportunities, including the introduction of a paddle-shift gearbox system, improved side impact protection, the application of new steering technology to enhance the steering effort on road courses, and the ongoing research and development to identify the most effective seat design, structure and seatbelt configuration to provide the drivers with the highest levels of protection.

The complete 2008 IndyCar Series schedule follows:

March 29 Homestead-Miami Speedway*
April 6 St Petersburg**
April 19 Twin Ring Motegi
April 27 Kansas Speedway
May 25 Indianapolis Motor Speedway
June 1 Milwaukee Mile
June 7 Texas Motor Speedway*
June 22 Iowa Speedway
June 28 Richmond International Raceway*
July 6 Watkins Glen International***
July 12 Nashville Superspeedway*
July 20 Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course***
August 9 Kentucky Speedway*
August 24 Infineon Raceway***
August 31 Belle Isle Park**
September 7 Chicagoland Speedway

* denotes night race; ** denotes street course; *** denotes road course

Third Euro date on ChampCar 14-race 2008 schedule.

Tuesday, 6th November 2007

Jerez added, Las Vegas lost as calendar released.

The 2008 Champ Car World Series will be contested over 14 races, with the addition of a third race in Europe to complement the return of Laguna Seca and the retention of established events the length and breadth of North America.

Despite speculation that the series may expand its overseas roster to include rounds in the UK and either France or Germany, it is Spain that gets the nod following the addition of Jerez de la Frontera to the schedule. The 'sherry country' venue will form an early-June double-header with Zolder, which kicked off the 2007 swing to Europe, with the third race, back at Assen, remaining in September to fill an otherwise lengthy gap between Road America and Surfers Paradise..

Jerez was built to host the 1986 Spanish F1 grand prix and retained the race for seven years, while also adding one of the most popular MotoGP
races to its roster in 1989. The circuit, which is set in a deep valley in the south of Spain, may have lost F1 to Barcelona but continues to be a regular testing venue for the series because of its regular good weather.

By pairing Jerez with Zolder and conducting them in June, we now will be in Europe during two different times next season, rather than just one as we were in 2007, series CEO and president Steve Johnson confirmed, Assen will remain in September, where it was very successful this year, [but] the two trips expand our reach in Europe and establish two footprints for future growth there.

The 30th Champ Car World Series will feature eight permanent road courses and six temporary street circuits, with six based in the US races, three in Canada and one race in Mexico to maintain a solid base on the North America continent. Jerez and the two other European events will join Surfers Paradise among the four overseas races, although the schedule still requires ACCUS/FIA approval.
