Hi there I'm new to the forum

I'm about to have a engine swap done on my 306 SR. We'll be taking out the 1.8 XU (hole in the block) and installing a 2.0 XU (8v).

I�m really looking forward to the increase in power over the 1.8 XU but I got to thinking, are there any mods I can do that will increase the 2.0 XU�s torque.

I�m not really interested in top end speed just initial acceleration; I�ll be mating the engine to an automatic gearbox.

Any ideas?

first, let me welcome you to the lion's den..u found the right spot..

yes there are mods for the 2.0 8v..i have a 1.8 8v so i could understand why u want more power from the 2.0 block..u could start off with the basic mods let the pug breathe better an intake & exhaust system, perhaps cam upgrade, i know some tuners talk about head work which i am not familar..we have some pug drivers here who have the 2.0 block they will have a better idea what you maybe looking for..

Thanks for the welcome plex306

I can�t claim to be an engine-head but I was under the impression that free flowing exhausts systems gave you more bhp but less torque. And truth be told I just want to smoke some Japanese a** at stoplights and roundabouts.

well partner u have friends here, there is two crazy pug drivers here who thinks like you..yes there is mods for that engine..when they come online they will respond to your request..so u want to beat a Jap import...humm Rolling Eyes

hahaha i like this guy how he talk der well welcome to the site man im savvy or kyle whichever works for u and i have de same block u want to put in your car the 2.0 xu plex who is dem two crazy fellas u talking bout i know one cant be me im no racer (shhhh) haha but i share the same ideology u do i want to smoke every sr20 and civic out there in a timing as for the mods there are plenty but it depends firstly on what u want and how much money u wanna spend dont think about ratching the engine cuz u will only recieve some quick fun followed by some disaster u will have to spend a little cash to get things moving but for me all i have so far is a intake and some exhaust work a 2 1.4 and my head is shaved by a couple mm so i have a slight increase in compression(this however was not done by me but previous owner) it runs but where this car really shines is on the track work and cornering now i notice one man aint post yet daz tamer or robert he can advise you how to do a successful turbo setup that im sure will smoke plenty jap arse if u want more torque increase you can possible order down a stage 1 or 2 cam that will get u off the line fast and raise the limiter just a bit to about 7200 but thats a fast road cam u can check sites such as piper,kent and those however to make that cam setup work properly u have to do calibration and retune the car for it also exhaust and intake to make most of it if u want some accel u can also lighten the flywheel for some added accel just be mind wary of spinning killer revs to climb hills those are just a few start points also u can polish the engine to clean it out but as stated before somewhere on this forum porting can be an issue since there is no proper machinery to do the such in trini.....WELCOME MAN and talk to tamer and others to get many upon varied views but remember u dont need a fast car to smoke a JAP
some of those japs are too cocky and dont even know how to handle their rides just be a fast driver Wink and u can smoke ne jap regardless if he faster than u hehehe what colour ur car is so i can look out for u? again bless up to the site

Thanks guys,

Don�t think I can justify the cost of a turbo set up � the new engine cost almost as much as the car is worth right now! I guess I�ll drive it around first and see if the 20% gain in power (103 � 123bhp) is enough for me.

The swap should be completed in the next week or two and I�ll let you guys know how she�s running.

I'm back,

Talk about a slight delay .... it's been almost a year ... finally got the new engine in but things aint so cool.

Unfortunately the car just isn�t running well. The idle is very rough, especially when cold. At start up it surges and hunts around. You can feel and hear it; but when it�s very bad the tach actually bounces about. On occassion it will even stall.

Funny thing is it ran well for one day then started to act up. Took it back to the mechanic changed the plugs and wires. We did notice that the plugs were white � like it was running lean.
Drove well for a day and a half then back to the crappy idle and stalling.

I'd normally think stepper motor, vacuum hoses etc. but all these things are standard from my original engine; and it was running fine before we pulled it.

Here's a silly question that shpuld have been answered before we started. Do the 1.8 and the 2.0 use the same ECU and program? Are there other things we should be looking at. I was told that this was a simple plug and play deal � any suggestions appreciated.

If it's a program issue can you remap a 1995 M.Marelli ECU or get a new chip for it?

PS: When it is running well (on two occassions) the 2.0 really pulls a lot nicer than the 1.8 � night and day ... the torque is sweet!

The plot thickens,

Just got an email from a company called Elecauto out of Argentina. The guy said I should send him my ECU # and he'd email me the software to program the 1.8 ECU to run the 2.0.

Is it that simple?

I assume the ECU is one of the black box next to the Battery, were's the ECU number going to be?

Your problem may not be as difficult as it looks.
Your map sensor plays an important part in this equation it�s a simple pressure sensing device that changes resistance with respect to pressure

This device if this is the problem along with the TPS and the Intake Air Temperature is responsible for your injector and timing control. The map sensor is connected to the intake manifold via a vacuum line it takes a 5 volt supply and outputs a signal voltage of between 0 and 5 volts 0 volt being closed throttle (absolute vacuum) or idle and 5 volts being WOT or at least 80% of WOT (wide open throttle or atmospheric) Now this is the part that I think concerns you the output voltage of the map sensor is related directly to the calculated fuel needs of the engine for which the E.C.U is designed now the O2 sensor if working properly should detect a lean burn and compensate but it can only work within the limits of the E.C.U this problem can be detected by using 2 digital voltmeters or 1 voltmeter and a rich/lean gauge

To overcome this problem you can bump up your fuel pressure or you may have to fool the ECU to keep the injectors on longer by manipulating the output voltage of the map sensor

This can be done by using a couple of resistors and a voltage regulator no big ting.

You definitely know your stuff; I'll pass this info along. What would be your preference, the work around or the reprogrammed ECU?

How is the reprogram done? Do you just plug a laptop in to a port and presto changeo?

I personally like the challenge so I would work around the E.C.U but you will have to make that choice you need to take into consideration how much time you have skill level patience and stuff like that���.its almost two years now I started my turbo project and I�m now fully enjoying my work.

If you want I can look at it for you make a proper diagnosis and you can then decide on the options

The remapping is not that difficult�..basically what they do is alter the relationship between the MAP sensor output voltage and the duty cycle of the injector they may or may not adjust the timing curves. Other parameters like the relationship between the TPS and the MAP will remain constant. This value in conjunction with the speed sensor and the ITS can calculate load and or altitude your modification is a small one and may not require much tuning
