Hi guys, I have recently bought myself what I suspect to be an EVO VI RS-2 from Japan, it is due to arrive in 2 weeks.
It has no AYC (the button is missing) and a twin plate clutch. It also has power windows, abs and airbags.
I was wondering how I can confirm the model accurately? Also does anyone have any further information on EVO VI RS-2's and what differentiate's them from GSR's and TME's etc..? Also how does the car feel to drive without AYC? Advantages?

It's possible to have an Evo 6 TME RS2... This is the "best" E6 IMHO.

Just try a search right here. Yeo did a full review on all the E6 models on an earlier page.
These are the OEM specifications for a 1999 Lancer Evolution VI RS and RS2 from a Brochure.
That's a start. I have an RS2. This is what I can remember.

Front LSD: RS/RS2 has front helical LSD... GSR has open diff.
This is the most important part used to reduce understeer.
Gear Ratios: E6 RS/RS2 has slightly closer ratios than GSRs...
BTW the RS/RS2 also came with an optional 4.875:1 final-drive ratio; instead of the 4.529:1 of the GSR.
If you have never run an Evo HARD with 4.875:1 gearing... you have never lived!
Milage STINKS... but the acceleration... THE ACCELERATION!... 
Power windows are standard on RS2 only... RS has manual window winders.
Rear view mirrors are "power adjustable" but don't have "power retract" feature...
The glass is a little thinner than an E6 GSR...
Rear differential crossmember is alloy on the RS/RS2... and cast-iron in the GSR. 
Less sound-proofing material in the RS/RS2 than the E6 GSR...
So overall weight for an RS is about 100 kg (220 lbs.) less than an E6 GSR...
and about 140 kg (308 lbs) less than an E7 GSR...
Brembo brakes are an option on the RS/RS2 (Fortunately mine had it.)
RS/RS2 Recaro seats are smaller/lighter like the 1800 GSR... E6 GSR seats are much better.
Again... fortunately for me, mine had upgraded front Recaros too.
RS2 also came with air-bags... |
BTW look underneath the rear. If you see a big alloy unit it's an AYC... and the car isn't an RS/RS2.
The rear LSD in an RS/RS2 is smaller... stronger... and cast-iron.
That's about it for now... 
BTW how can you import an E6 in 2007?
It's passed the age limit for registration. Be careful of a rip-off please.
Driving & Handling: I've only driven a friend's E6 GSR with AYC once.
I can only repeat what GSR owners say...

For less experienced drivers... get a GSR. The AYC will save your butt in an emergency.
For more experienced drivers, or Solodex competitors... RS/RS2 is IT!... 'Nuff said!

Hey mate, thank you for the very detailed reply!
I am very much looking forward to it landing! I have never even driven or been in an EVO!
My only concern is that I think mine has ABS as it is listed on the Auction sheet, however
I did read somewhere online that ABS was still an option for the RS-2??
Importing and registering an E6 in Western Australia (where I live) is no problems! 
In regards to the AYC, does yours have the (Tarmac, Snow and Gravel) button missing as mine does below?
In regards to the ABS unit, is it visible in the engine bay photo?

Welcome to the MadMen Forum.
First off, I didn't know you were living in Australia. ... Import regulations are different there.
(Tarmac, Snow and Gravel) button... AFAIK that 3-way button is only available from the E7 to E9...
with the Active Centre Differential. The E6 has a Viscous Coupling Centre Diff. Fixed setting...
No Active Diff... Missing button is for the driving lights in an E6 GSR AFAIK.
Yours has GSR seats + GSR CLIMATE CONTROL (dashboard) + Retracting Mirrors (below missing button.)
My RS2 looks like this. No E6 GSR CLIMATE CONTROL. Manual A/C knobs only...
I also have a 4wd Lancer 1800 GSR with Climate Control. It looks like your Evo 6...
Maybe ABS and Climate Control was offered as an export option for the RS2 to Australia.
ABS unit, is it visible in the engine bay photo?... Difficult to say from pic but that looks like it near windscreen
wiper motor (Top right in pic.) Easy to tell. ABS unit has a number of brake-lines (metal tubes)
plumbed into it (metal alloy block)... as well as electrical connector(s.)
BTW looks like you have some kind of pillow-ball top shock mounts there.
Let us know what suspension it came with. Include more pix.

... I have never even driven or been in an EVO! You are going to have one hell of a lot of FUN.
Enjoy... but take it EASY for the first few months while you "learn" the car.
It's like a FWD car on STEROIDS! It can put you in trouble VERY quickly.
Too many crashes happen then because of being unfamiliar with the Evo.
Let us know how it goes when you get it.

Ahhh interesting! So do some GSR's come with driving lights and some don't? How odd!
A couple things really made me think it might be an RS-2 such as the fact that it has a twin
plate clutch, the auction sheet says "EVO VI GSR Type R" on it. Also the genuine mitsubishi
alloy strut brace was an option for RS-2's? Fingers crossed that it is!!
Is it possible for a JDM RS-2 to come equipped with digital climate control and retracting mirrors?
I know for a fact that the RS-2 did come out with an ABS option - no idea about the climate
control though! Will have to research that one further!
In regards to the pillow ball camber tops, The car has HKS Hipermax Pro suspension. I will post
additional photos of it up on the readers section as soon as I get it home and give it a nice wash
The boat arrives next Thursday, so a couple days after that for customs clearance.

owned a GD WRX and before that a 350rwhp R32 GTS-4 Skyline (had a GT-R motor etc),
I found that the R32 was geared to high and was a bit to heavy to enjoy it properly on the streets
and tight courses. The WRX was way to heavy and the understeer was ridiculous let alone
the lack of power and tendency to break parts 
Would love to see some more photo's of your RS-2, it looks unreal especially with
the TME front bumper!!

Welcome remix! 
do some GSR's come with driving lights and some don't? Actually the RS/RS2 replaced the GSR's fog lights
with shields, like your car has... and that's why the switch is missing from the dashboard too.
"EVO VI GSR Type R"... Never heard of an Evo described like that before.
Maybe you will be lucky and it is an RS2 after all. First thing to do is look at the rear diff...
If it's a big alloy lump... It's a GSR. IF it's a smaller cast iron lump... It's an RS/RS2.
As for climate control & GSR trim in an RS2... Who knows? Nothing is impossible with ...
Hmm... a R32 GTS-4 Skyline... then a GD WRX... both too heavy and not agile enough.
Then you choose an Evo 6 RS2... Ahhh.. A true MadMan...
Not many would trade a Skyline for a WRX... STi maybe. Seems you like handling more than
drags... so do I... and now with the Evo you have the perfect starting point.
some more photo's of your RS-2... with the TME front bumper... That's a couple months from now remix.
Preparing for Solodex (AutoX/Gymkhana) at last. Soon will retire E6 to "Weekend Warrior"
& Solodex ONLY status. Replacing with 4wd 1800 GSR "Daily Driver" (for now.)
Buying tools (and saving $$$) to start full adjustable suspension, engine & drivetrain
upgrade very soon. Still to get Whiteline poly bushings, wider rims & tyres and decent cams.
I'll post "Project Pages" on my three cars (from "Readers' Rides") when each is finished.
